Capitalism needs a spare labor supply. Which is better: keeping a pool of people unemployed and poor, their skills deteriorating, their families falling apart, stressed and miserable, or, keeping the spare labor pool employed and still available to employers, but able to keep a roof over their heads, keep their families together, and maintain their work skills? The old or a new way? Use your brains.

Her argument is so flawed, many of these jobs won't be able to be filled properly because of the lack of skill of the employee. There aren't enough jobs to be created so they'd be jobs like chief pen pusher pusher.

Sounds wonderful in theory. However, this would essentially displace a huge chunk of the private economy. What makes anyone think that the government would be a better allocator of jobs and capital than the market? Hasn’t this already been tried on a vast scale in places like the Soviet Union?

Crazy how people slam this idea. Why is it not a good idea to supply jobs to unemployed people that WANT to work. The people that want free stuff wont work regardless how much you pay them, these are people that want to be productive members of society. There are so many productive things that could be done by these workers as well, finally repairing the infrastructure of this country. This would also create something in the private sector that hasnt happened since the 1950s. The shortage of available labor in the market would cause corporations to actually compete for their labor needs. No more Walmart paying the bare minimum because they know in this post manufacturing economy there is always a pool of unemployed looking for any work possible. In this situation these corporations would have no choice but make their jobs more desirable. Its time in this country that the people, especially those that WANT to work get a break.

Most skilled employment is more than $15 an hour in many states. Plumbers, electricians, HVAC technician, machine tool programmer, machinery mechanic, dental hygienist, etc. It would be prudent to offer some of this training in high schools. There are plenty of jobs out there but not at 15 an hour most pay much more. Jobs guarantee wouldn't really cover the much needed jobs in our market. It makes sense to direct people to trade schools and offer training in high schools not this federal jobs guarantee pipe dream

If they're going to make us work just for the basic necessities of life at the very least they should make finding a job a guarantee. Most people seem to have this idea that you must work to live. Otherwise you deserve any harm that comes your way. Even death or imprisonment. I say to these people, Fine. if you believe everyone should have to work then make work a guarantee! Also fuck you.

Now imagine they're looking after you kids, or your grandma. Imagine they're helping build a bridge that you are gonna drive across! This is the reality of the FJG.

I'm not sure how those proposing it are planning to do it, but frankly we are able in the 21st century create a Jobs guarantee without having to worry about putting people in jobs they don't want to do. You merely offer the jobs that people are qualified for (that you will have to yes develop a mechanism for to judge qualifications) and people can choose to accept jobs from a list. It's that simple, and since it is a job guarantee it would give people a chance to develop skills and obviously for less than they normally would get for the role. It would spring board training throughout the nation. It would keep people's skills fresh. The only issue I can see is that due to the user amount you would have to have a ton of web servers to support the access. I'm thinking use the already present work centers around the nation, use a smart phone application, and use a website. It could work. I mean I would prefer an UBI because me and my girlfriend are employed so that extra 2k a month would do wonders for our budget. Yet from a societal view a jobs guarantee would actually be better. Also make it so someone can quit any job they take with the caveat that there is some sort of penalty whether it's a cool down period or something else so they don't quit jobs daily lol

For me the biggest problem I have is that many academically and intellectually minded people have very little understanding of the skills required to do blue collar jobs effectively. You can’t just plug someone in to a trade and expect them to be productive let alone not screw up the infrastructure that was there initially. Tradespersons develop their skills over years not only with training (also expensive) but with real world experience. Infrastructure needs resources as well, lots of them which are only getting more expensive. If we want people to dig holes and pick up trash then fine, but if you think old truckers can rebuild our infrastructure than you are delusional.

Do i have to move to get a job? So, where to? If i'm a democrat or a retardican does that effect where i work? If it doesn't how do you plan to deal with the violence? What if i'm in a small town, do i bussed to Detroit to fix potholes? This is a very pretty thinky thought but this 'expert' can only describe vague platitudes and promises. If you really just want to vote for someone to give you a promise and not follow through, bernie's your dude. Why do you promise my wife she can make minimum wage instead of stay home like she wants? Does this rediculous idea address geogrpahic disparities? If so, what do you think all of the folks in new york state will think when they're exported to the midwest? Will seattle bro's like digging holes in Louisiana? This is not a smart idea nor one that will win an election. Or ever manifest in the real world.

I notice she went from saying people who want or are willing to work , and then going into people not joining the fjg she knows some won't and will go on government aid.
Then goes on to not address the few who do unpaid, undervalued work that actually adds value to society.

Their grasp on reality is that doing unpaid work is unproductive ..so you must find something the market values.

Fjg ignores the benefits of society comes from unload undervalued work .. what makes a stranger's time any more valuable than the person who birthed the child. .

Ubi is better
Fjg is involuntary employment

FJG is better than UBI. It takes power away from corporations which relies on a pool of desperate unemployed people who have no options. A lot of people on welfare actually want to work but have no opportunities.

It's a tough situation. The government DOES need something like job guarantee though, in one form or another. Private companies are naturally very selective, even stingy, about employees and often it's not fair for the job seeker. Actually I'd say it's not fair at all for the job seeker, to toil for months and months getting rejeected everywhere like my situation now.

Yeah. Sounds like a great idea. Thankfully we have huge seccuesses like the public option for health insurance in the US to look to for precedent (this is sarcasm). Let me let you MMT people in on a little secret: the government sucks at allocating money efficiently. The market isn't perfect but does a way better job than a government made up of individually motivated central planners does to efficiently allocate resources.

Jobs guarantee could be the biggest social experiment we actually CAN and SHOULD do. It must of course begin with a broad assessment of what is actually in demand for the economy. Then the universities could be the starting ground for this, a federal jobs guarantee would make B. SANDERS idea for free college even better by getting PAID to educate yourself in demanded professions. Getting paid ofc feels insanely good so all that dopamine creates better students because dopamine helps with concentration. OFC this wont last forever and be an option all the time because people who graduate get to go into the world and get a job. Very interesting but sad to see all of the things that are lost to lack of political will.
