I really don’t understand the concept of buying a retirement home, instead it should be a rental one, so that the one who runs the show will have interest in serving the seniors living there. If one feels that the atmosphere/ service provided is not good, they should be able to leave with due notice.
I’m 65 years of age and feel that ultimately such facilities are very much needed.

I am also of the same opinion that we should live in a mixed community where people of every age group are living rather than a small secured enclave of all old people. In fact urban development rules should be amended, so in every housing complex being approved, atleast 15% of apartments are designed suitable for senior citizens, be it hispital sized lifts, ramps, skid proof flooring, grab bars, wider doors to accommodate wheel chair etc and common facility like central kitchen, vehicle free walking areas nearby full fledged hospitals etc

well lots have changed i believe this is a very good product, as the parents are buying this to secure there futire living, funds issues can be resolved by reverse mortgage . when the person is not able to pay, then he can use his appartment for reverse mortgage. kids will still have opportunity to get the balance of the house after paying for the bank interest.

Biggest issue is availability of nearby Medical facility, Medical evacuation, specialized medical help, as you mentioned cardiology, neurology etc etc. For Indians coming from abroad to India after their long careers abroad may not have portable medical insurance that works in India. I doubt very much childrens of retirees are at all interested in such properties and when you get away from them you are out of sight out of mind ......

I agree and another thing in USA and other countries, senior citizen homes are rental and are expensive, as manpower is expensive there. In India the concept is new but more communities (existing) should have associations who can provide assistane to convert a flat into senior citizen friendly , like providing paid services to regularly get attendance of senior citizens, their wellbeing , in case of emergency thier kids are informed and sent them to hospital, one ambulance in each society, camera emergency buttons in each room, antiskid tiles , camera in drawing room etc. this will not isolate senior citizens. And someone suggested , senior citizen homes should be next to orphanage and gaushala where those who can , can help those in need , it will be mutual affection , in return will get positive energy.

That point about mixed settings of apartments and populace is really valid point and need of the hour! 👍

Sir, very good insights and well detailed knowledge and expertise and you really changed my thinking. I need to discuss few of my thinking. How can I Contact and my main worry is how to identify good retirement homes.

What about senior citizens who have dependant adult child with disability like some mental illness and are caregivers but in few years they too will require help as well as child. Unfortunately there is no place in India like that.if the adult child who will be in thirties will not feel good amongst old people. But this needs to be thought about.

I have been caring for my parents and many of my friend's parents whose children are settled out of India. Seeing the potential of assisted living, I have decided to build an apartment for seniors with all the facilities required. I have also realized that one day, I will require such a place to live if my children move away from home. So, I'm building this Assisted living apartment with most of my friends as buyers for our own future. But still, your thoughts are quite deep and very helpful to work on the process. Thank you.
