You might need to implement this math to correct the bad flight model when it comes to slips. See my latest video for details.

I compare wing sweep to a knife slicing an apple. Pushing a knife on an apple encounters resistance but, if you give the knife an angle and slice the apple makes it much easier.

I thought the primary reason the swept wing "works" to reduce critical mach is that it lengthens the travel for the air from leading to trailing edge... basically stretching the chord out from 'short and fat to long and thinner.' To illustrate that, the green arrow in the video should be from top to bottom of the image, the direction of airflow over the wing - not the short distance (which is not how the air flows). An arrow showing the airflow direction illustrates the longer travel over the swept wing vs if the wing wasn't swept, and consequently, reduced the critical mach because of the "stretched" chord. I was taught this a long time ago, and the visualization worked at the time, but I'm not an aeronautical engineer - YMMV.

Now compare Austin and his physics knowledge with Devs at Asobo. He literally eats them for breakfast. That is why Xplane will always be my preferred Sim.

Hello Austin,

I suspect that if you're using the perpendicular component of velocity for force calculations, you're miscalculating drag for swept wings. Specifically, you're underestimating parasite drag and overestimating induced drag.

Parasite drag: imagine 2 identical wings, one straight and the other angled 45 degrees (I'm exluding compressibility effects, so suppose Mach is way below critical): in real life, except for secondary effects, the parasite drag should be about the same. While in RC3, the 45 swept wing would have HALF the drag of the straight wing!

Induced drag: imagine 2 wings with the same area and the same EFFECTIVE span, one straight and the other angled 45 degrees. In real life, for a given speed and a given lift, the 2 wings will have the same induced drag (provided the spanwise lift distribution is identical). While in RC3, for the sweep wing you would calculate an effective dynamic pressure one half that of the straight wing, and an effective Cl double that of the straight wing (hence Cl^2 will be quadrupled), giving DOUBLE the induced drag of the straight wing.

My suggestion is to use the full forward velocity for force calculations, and use instead reduced Cl and Cm coefficients to account for sweep effects.

Great stuff - Many thanks. Minor point - the Bell X1 had a 10% thick wing airfoil - NACA 65-110 with a conventional looking leading edge. The later, also supersonic, Lockheed Starfighter had a straight wing and that certainly did have a super sharp leading edge that had to be protected on the ground to stop folks cutting themselves on it.

Thanks for an(other) interesting video on X-plane, however, it leave me wondering, is delta-wing vortex maneuvering lift (and drag) modelled in XP12, ie. not only straight and level....?
- I think that I remember that XP10 and 11 didn't have vortex-lift (and drag) incorporated, at all....???

Mr Meyer, there appears to be a problem with lighting in X-Plane 12. A few weeks ago on a three mile approach (KHWD) the runway was barely visible and I could not see the VASI lights until maybe a mile from the threshold. Today's (12/13/22) download, the instrument panel is so dark the instruments are barely usable and now the VASI light are not visible until the displaced threshold. I've tried other airport and the problem is the same. Yes, I did try re-downloading the program.

Just updated X-Plane 12 to the latest version 06 and what a disappointment. I was under the impression 06 was to take care of lighting issues, The instrument panel is so dark on the Cessna 172 it's unusable. Talk about flying in the dark on a VFR day. Ever try changing the comm frequency from standby to active, it doesn't work. I've been waiting for the past 9 months for these issues to be corrected. A BIG disappointment Mr Myer.
