Women in Virginia were told to nail their windows shut in order to protect themselves from the 'Southside strangler' Timothy Spencer who climbed in through windows to kill his victims in their homes. Spencer raped and strangled at least five women during the mid-1980s in Virginia. With a string of petty crime convictions and a history of disruptive behaviour, Timothy Wilson Spencer went on to become one of the most prolific killers. Preying on young women in their homes, Spencer would climb in through windows to rape and repeatedly strangle his victims. With DNA forensics advancing, Spencer's previous convictions came back to haunt him, allowing police to link him to the murders of three women. His case would in fact make legal history as the first ever case in Virginia where a killer was convicted as a result of DNA 'fingerprinting' evidence. Another man was originally convicted for one murder and served five years before the 'Southside Strangler' was brought to justice.
