I had the opportunity to spend time in Rockport this weekend and listen to a local guide share her knowledge on all things Reds, bass, gear, etc.

The fly fishing community can seem intimidating and overwhelming for new angler but thanks to veterans like Alvin who are willing to share, it’s a great community to be part of.

Back in my college days I had a professor from Taiwan give 3 rules of GIS mapping which can apply to just about anything, especially fishing.
1) be patient
2) do over
3) do over
😀 good video Alvin, cheers

After the strip set, I think it is important to slowly raise the rod tip to engage the shock absorber. I always enjoy your videos! Also have great memories of smallmouth in the crystal water of the Devils River.

I might suggest you film some backyard practice videos covering the casting techniques you mentioned. Something that I can duplicate in my yard.

Great information Alvin.. Thanks a lot! Now I just need to get down to the coast! 🌊 🎣🙂 Caught 2 more nice largemouth this evening, both around 5lb and both on a Dedeaux Popper (yellow tail/ yellow and black head). Really appreciate all you share with us! Have a great week! 👍👌🎣

Line control. I have seen multiple failures because of tangled fly line. Your suggestions?

#1 rule to catch redfish - shut up and listen to your guide when Alvin tells you to cast somewhere or strip faster

Man we went down to copano bay. It was during November so we were there during the right time. I caught a 37” black drum on conventional. I’m wanting to do some redfish fishing with my 8wt. Do you recommend taking the reel apart to clean it after your done in the salt or just rinsing it off? I enjoy your videos man! Keep it up!

The bear analogy is/was spot on. In my AO oyster reefs are 100x more of a problem than grass.

I’ve been on several guided fly fishing trips and what seems to kill my fly casting is my worry about the backcast and hooking the guide on the platform. A recent guide told me not to worry, he knows where the fish is and where my cast is going (should go), he doesn’t want to get hooked either. Keep up the great content.

Haha...love it, "well, jerk back on the rod right?" As I implied in other comments, love your delivery. Funny.
Can't wait to get tying.
On another note, if you want to fish the Big Hole, Rock ck, Blackfoot, or anything up here in Montana, give me a jingle; I have a few rafts. We live in Philipsburg. Love to host you and your wife. We also have a great flyshop.

Outstanding overview. Thank you! I’d add one thing - You can use water flows in the area you fish to enhance the fly presentations to maximize bites.

How do you differentiate red fish from mullet? I’ve had a problem casting at mullet to where I just ignore them then boom it’s actually a red. What do you look for?
