Honestly, for games that is BS. You can get a Rift for $399, you would have to be an idiot to buy this for gaming. Thanks for showing the main issue with these MR systems.

Even though it will probably cause issues with existing rift/oculus games, It should be very possible as long as the software/games are optimized around the controller behavior.

No surprise here, and people complain about setting up permanent sensors for room scale. Why would anyone limit themselves with inside out tracking, its not there yet, better off purchasing headsets thats been proven to work and won't cost you much more or even the same. I know competition is good, but if these limitations have a negative effect on VR industry it will only slow the growth down. Hopefully people will do their research.

Vive owner here. I'm glad there are affordable options for the average consumer, but this does feel like Microsoft is showing up very late to the party with little to show for it. The Halo Recruit app shows just how behind the times Microsoft is in the VR space. (though to be honest, I can't imagine that ever being that impressive even on VR Day 1). Microsoft needed to do something to make itself stand out, and this is a giant dud. I have a feeling this is going to go the way of the Microsoft phone, which is full of out-dated apps that no longer work and overall lackluster features due to poor support. I agree with the other posters that I'm afraid this will be a step back for VR, as the average consumer will think this represents where VR is today.

there was a space pirate trainer demo and they had over the shoulder gesture working ......maybe it was modified by the dev or it was using what u mentioned with the continuous motion......if the developer has to change something .....it's moving slightly the plane next to the headset that the controller intersects when u move it there

no one is saying it has the most perfect tracking ever .........what they r going for is the cheapest convenient headset they could make ....that will work great 95% of the time and there r work arounds the rest of the time ....if anyone doesn't care about the advantages of this system they should just buy a system with advantages in the tracking

....I wonder if the price will drop to 300 or lower in the next 6 months .....or if next year they will make a beast version for 600-800

This is fantastic! This is a positive first step towards portability. Samsung HMD Odyssey is on pre-order and I cant wait to ditch my Vive with all its sensors on the walls.

I guess the only issue , is if the tracking returns BEFORE it comes back into your view. If it does, then great!

Anything but full roomscale is a complete downgrade at this point. Thanks for confirming my fears about these.

This is how Move controllers track in Brookhaven Project PSVR so that you're not entirely screwed if you block a light, can still aim by rotating the controller. If Windows MR could run on a not too expensive laptop it could be just enough for me.

The question I have not seen on any review is what is the comfort for glasses? Is this glasses friendly unlike the Rift?

Well the only decent one from Samsung isn't coming to the UK and these aren't any cheaper than the rift. Gonna bomb methinks.

This was my main concern too, but honestly this doesn't look too bad to me. you're generally not doing things behind your back, for extended periods of time that also require accurate positional information. if it locks in position but the rotation still works, you'll still be able to aim at things far away. its not like you have great accuracy behind your back :p
my only concern is any physics that requires throwing something from behind your back, since the controllers seemed to lock up pretty quick if you aren't moving them, which you may not if you're paused waiting to throw something.

This with a backpack PC or laptop and a lot of open space will be pretty awesome.

This shows that VR games where you need to shoot in opposite directions simultaneously will work just fine since the controller stays locked with some rotation.

Doesn't look TOO bad... but it would have been better with four cameras in front (like Santa Cruz prototype) and two on either side toward the back of the headset. I mean, if it had six inside-out tracking cameras instead of two, a 6m (19'8") cord, and controllers that are closer in form and function to Touch / Knuckles, along with the enhancements of the Odyssey (audio, hardware IPD, OLED, FOV / larger lenses, resolution), and if the camera-based tracking were really good, it might certainly challenge not just the Rift but the Vive for 1st gen room-scale VR. As it is it's probably mainly suited to sims (driving/cockpit) and undemanding VR apps.

I don't see that inside-out tracking is really much of a game-changer. The Vive Lighthouses were simple to install and use and tracking was great. Inside-out is superior to Rift's constellation (3-4 external cameras) from a user-friendliness standpoint though. Right now things like wireless and high FOV are the competitive advantages that would/will distinguish a headset.

WMR head sets can have huge play area with a laptops. Rift is stuck with a few square feet area. Can Rift do it? No.  If inside-out tracking is bad, why FB is bent upon creating one. 0.0001% use cases are always used to hit MS products.

Nice video, I have an acer headset and I have played a few bow and arrow games and it is not as bad as you would think. What excites me is that I think the pc overhead will prove that these headsets are more than just a mid range headset as most vive and oculus owners contend.

The mixed reality headsets are better than rift and vive. It's just that the controllers are garbage both design and how they function.

You learn to look where your hands are. If he simply looked up or over his shoulder a little it works fine. Revive it's what's buggy as shit. All the negative reviews you're seeing are using Revive. Native WMR and SteamVR work really well. To me this can all be fixed with better design. Put the scabbard on your hip instead of back for example.
