Gentle Giant live album is a great recording too. Being re-mastered I do believe now.
ОтветитьBoy, I missed Renaissance - Live At Carnegie Hall in that list... That live version of Scheherazade and Other Stories is prog music at it's peak!
ОтветитьGreat show guys, but please Jeremy, get a proper mic!!! 😉
ОтветитьI think this is a fantastic list. Very varied. Kudos! BUT Where is Zappa!?
Ответитьlet Ross talk guys. he's the talent. to watch Vic explaining Haken's influences to Haken's frontman was uncomfortable ahahah
ОтветитьWhile it sounds raw and unpolished, Fripp did overdubs on USA. Eddie Jobson was brought in to fix some of the violin parts and some keyboards.
ОтветитьMATH
ОтветитьMaybe too obscure for this wheel, but Anglagard's Buried Alive is probably my favorite live album.
ОтветитьNearly all of of these bands had their best or second-best live albums on the wheel. And King Crimson ended up with a live album that may not even be top-7 in their live album discography.
ОтветитьGet All You Deserve is wayyyy better than Home Invasion, just sayin
ОтветитьSeeing Snow Live at Morsefest in 2016 was a massive dream come true. As Roie said, I never thought I'd ever get to see Neal Morse perform with Spock's Beard, let alone see Snow live. It's a shame it wasn't in S tier, but that's the name of the game.

I love Rush so, so, so much, but I don't think ESL is their best live album. It's too polished and studio-sounding. Too much post-concert recording work for my tastes. ... Then, you hear that searing version of YYZ with the drum solo and go "yeah, that's an S".
ОтветитьLove Ross!
ОтветитьWhat is the hat Jeremy is wearing?
ОтветитьNo camel or renaissance?!
ОтветитьI love prog! Why do I just not get Gentle Giant???
ОтветитьGrowling vocals should be automatic D
ОтветитьYessongs is incredible but sounds horrible.
ОтветитьGreat job guys. However, I think participants should place albums on the chart without making room for others. That would be more fun as things have to be moved around.
ОтветитьOne that wasn't on the wheel: Supertramp's live album " Paris " is superb
Kansas should be in the S tier
Seconds Out is the greatest live album ever and it's not even close!
ОтветитьI have no issues with anyone on the panel expressing their individual rankings or preferences. However, I do take offense when someone starts to make sweeping generalizations and feel they can talk for the masses. Nick, your comment "E.L.P. was a hard listen for anyone at anytime", is a generalization. It was based on what? If that is your experience, say so. I know I had no trouble latching on to this and it always was a joy to listen from start to finish each time I revisit it. Speak to your experiences only. If others agree with your point of view, I have no issues with that either but to say you know how others feel about it is just not cool. Just my two cents.
S - E.L.P "Welcome Back My Friends..."

B - Dream Theater "Live in NYC"
- Porcupine Tree "Anaesthetise"
- Transatlantic "World Tour"
- Spock's Beard "Snow Live"
C - Peter Gabriel "Secret World Live"

D - Gentle Giant "Playing the Fool"

- Big Big Train "Merchants of Light"
I know there are ton of other albums but I can't leave out U.K.'s "Night After Night", Frank Zappa's "Live in New York", and I greatly prefer "At Budokan" from Dream Theater. And since it is available now on audio for the first time, I have to include "Live at Pompeii" by Pink Floyd. That would be S tier for sure.
I don't know about Steven Wilson in B. That is one of, if not, the best sounding live concerts I've ever watched. It also just came out in 4K, which I believe is the first prog 4K release ever!
ОтветитьCan’t we just put them all in S tier 🙏
ОтветитьSaw Haken live last week. Ross is in god form, really excellent performance!
ОтветитьSteven Wilson and Pulse in 'B' have me absolutely fuming! 😂
ОтветитьOpeth Roundhouse is best experienced in the full video mode, not just to listen. Mikael's banter is classic!
ОтветитьGreat show. Fantastic list.
ОтветитьGreat segment.
ОтветитьAm I the only person in this realm that doesn’t like Steven Wilson? What a bunch of marks… lol
Ответить"The Prog Report" and you have a person unfamiliar with Marillion? Wanting to downgrade Bursting Out? SMH. The really odd thing though, not including Gabriel Plays Live and instead choosing Secret World Live. Pulse is trash and so is Delicate Sound of Thunder. Live at Pompeii for me. (especially the new Steven Wilson mix)
ОтветитьELP live album in D, my goodness, one of the greatest live albums ever, they were the ultimate musicians, nobody was better.
ОтветитьFor what it's worth, here's my list.
S - E.L.P "Welcome Back My Friends..."
- Genesis "Seconds Out"
- Yes "Yessongs"
- Gentle Giant "Playing the Fool"
- Kansas "Two For the Show"
- Jethro Tull "Bursting Out"
A - King Crimson "USA"
B - Rush "Exit..Stage Left"
C - Peter Gabriel "Secret World Live"
- Steve Hackett "Live at the Royal Festival Hall"
D - Steven Wilson "Home Invasion"
- Opeth "The Roundhouse Tapes"

- Dream Theater "Live in NYC"
- Porcupine Tree "Anaesthetise"
- Transatlantic "World Tour"
- Spock's Beard "Snow Live
- Marillion "The Theiving Magpie"
Kansas is B tier? Man alive! Easy S tier. Band at the peak of their powers and with very little post production.
ОтветитьSuper cool meeting you guys at the Devin Townsend show!
ОтветитьI'm new to this format. What does "S" tier signify?
ОтветитьThis brought back some memories: Operation LiveCrime was a present from my first girlfriend when I was at school - I still have the CD and the booklet but the VHS and the box have been lost to time, I think. Great album and performance, up there with the best rock operas IMO, albeit it still gets somewhat overrated because most conceptual metal records are a bit lame. I saw Tate and band play OM in a small club in Brighton a few years ago in front of maybe 100 people and it still sounded awesome. The Thieving Magpie has a special place for me too: I'd been introduced to Marillion and liked them, but when a guy put this album on in the sixth form common room stereo, out came La Gazza Ladra/Slàinte Mhath and I was blown away. They play Slàinte a bit faster than the album version, and Ian Mosley puts in a bit of extra percussive ear-candy which gives it a real lick in the arse. Also the disc two recording of Misplaced Childhood is my go-to version rather than the studio recording. Was also in the audience at Shepherd's Bush for The Whirld Tour - easily one of my top ten gigs. Wish I'd been there for Anesthetize, Secret World, Pulse and Exit Stage Left. Whoever said Get All You Deserve is a better set than Home Invasion is right - the Grace For Drowning tour was incredible, the Beggs/Holzman/Minnemann/Ibrahim/Wilson line-up is my favourite - and I also prefer to hear 3 Sides Live over Seconds Out (wish the former included Supper's Ready, though). Spock's Beard and Jethro Tull require further listening on my part... Thanks for an entertaining episode :)
ОтветитьS tier for me. Scenes, ESL, Snow, and Genesis.
ОтветитьThis made me want to check out the Tull live album
ОтветитьWhy is opeth so low :(
ОтветитьPorcupine Tree's 'Coma Divine' is my favorite Steven Wilson related live album.
ОтветитьI would love to hear Yessongs get a modern remaster treatment!
Ответитьtotally agree with moving Kansas down, I mean the best song they ever wrote and which was only maybe 3 years earlier and they change the key on the chorus. I was so disappointed when I heard it. Looking forward to checking out the Tull live one as I don't know it at all.
ОтветитьThe comment about poor early 70's live recordings is utter nonsense The Who live at Leeds ELP Pictures At An Exhibition, and Made In Japan by Deep Purple are some of the best audio quality out there.
and how the hell can you put Welcome back by ELP in D, Cleary the guy knows sweet fuck all about innovators of Prog.
Translatlantic should be nowhere near the top tier.
ОтветитьKansas B Tier is Stupid!!!!!!
ОтветитьE L P " Welcome Back...."
Great album 51 years old.
Excellent job on this one. This is one of the few wheel of progs where I was very familiar with all the albums chosen. The only one I am not familiar with is jethro tull as I never got into them. I just listened to the round house tapes and you have made a grave error by ranking this low. Night of the Silent Water and When are absolute master pieces played live. This is such an amazing sounding album. I would put this up in at least B. Exit Stage Left deserves high praise but I am an 80s rush fan and would absolutely listen to a show of hands or the first disk on the clock work angels live album.
ОтветитьWhere the hell is Iron Maiden Live After Death? That’s the first thing I think of when I think great live albums
ОтветитьDamn, Opeth should have been in S over those other old dusty recordings and that is coming from someone who is turning 60 next year.
Ответить
