EXCELLENT VIDEO... Love this...
I noticed you were using the iPhone 12 MAX... and it's been over 11 months ago...
Since I need to buy a newer iPhone (I have the 8+) ... Which iPhone do you suggest?

I will be moving back to Albuquerque, New Mexico (US) in a few weeks to RE-Open my Acting Studio.... Teaching acting for Film... TV... Stage... I want to teach the student/actors about filming with iPhones...
Thank you for sharing this video...

Hi Simon I have a mic question. My friend and I just started a Urban Exploring YT channel which involves filming outdoors. We are recording from our iPhone 13 Pro Max's on a isteady x2 gimbal (one you reviewed and quite liked). We are either holding our phones by the gimbal of course or at times setting the gimbal as a tripod and standing in front doing a intro/outro while we are a few feet away in frame. Obvious the mic hardly picked us up and all you could hear was wind and leaves blowing. Even when holding the phone wind was a issue. What mic would work for us with a gimbal? If we went with a shotgun mic would we have to have it facing us the whole time while holding the phone and recording whats in front of us?

Thank you, but just found out Filmic Pro is subscription, which at entry level isn’t viable. What’s the competition that’s not subscription based to a filmic pro alternative? Great video and movie btw

For audio, let's not forget the great option to record with the internal iPhone microphone AND a high quality external microphone separately and syncing the audio in post. That's fairly easy to do in most video editors and it gives you a lot of freedom of where to put microphones (or how many to use).

@umbertoaguiar
@umbertoaguiar - 20.11.2022 23:38

Hello Simon. . I hope you can solve the most bizarre problem I've recently faced seeing that you are certainly the main expert on iPhone shooting I know of.

I am using an iPhone 13 Pro to shoot news. It's an incipient project. I bought lots of equipment . No problem to find the best lenses, filters, backpack etc for my project . But audio equipment has been a full throttle nightmare😱😱😱

I am determined to not use wired lavaliere mics anymore after near 30 years asking "could you please pass the cable under your clothes?". I think they are rather primitive and the difference in quality between wired lavaliere mics and wireless mics is irrelevant in many modern scenarios where most of the viewing will be online.

I have a Picogear Pro kit, a Godox Movelink kit, a Rode filmmaker kit and a Godox UHF kit.. The Rode and the UHF are to be used only with plug on XLR transmitters connected to reporter mics. I intend to never use their wired lavaliere mics and use only the wireless lavaliere mics from the Picogear and Godox Movelink kits.

But all that will be useless if I can't solve a most bizarre, strange problem I've experienced recently. I recorded no less than 100 tests trying different wireless kits (Deity, Mackie, Godox, Saramonic etc) I always used a Rode SC 7 TRS to TRRS cable connected to a Ugreen audio to lightning cable. Never a problem. Clean and strong audio.

But a few days ago I tested two audio mixers/adapters: a Comica and a Beachtek. I don't know if it is related but the problems started after I used the Rode cable to connect those audio adapters to my iPhone.

The problem is that I now have a very strong noise (and practically no voice) in audio recorded using my iPhone. The most puzzling thing is that , as I said before, I used the Rode cable some 100 times at least with no problems.

I did a few tests after the noise started and could clearly isolate the Rode cable as the source of the noise.

But here is the puzzle: I get very bad noise ( the recording is unusable. Actually, the voice is almost gone and there is practically only noise) when I connect the Rode cable to the Picogear wireless receiver and the Godox wireless receiver. I got the same noise when I used a second iPhone so my phone is not the problem so, as I said, I am sure of only one thing: The source of the noise is the Rode SC7 cable adapter. If I use a Godox TRS to TRRS cable, for example, then there is no noise.

But if I connect my phone to a Sennheiser shotgun for phones using the Rode cable then there is no noise whatsoever! And there was also no noise when I connected the phone to the Picogear wireless system using the Rode cable and the Rode interface AI micro!!!

Also, no noise when I used the Rode cable to connect the iPhone to the mixers/adapters but I need to double check that. So, this is a brief of the problem:

1 The Rode SC 7 cable adapter TRS to TRRS creates a terrible noise when connecting two different wireless receivers to my phone , noting that I used it before with the same receivers and never had a problem.

The noise started after I used the cable with Comica and Beachtek mixers.

No noise when I use the Rode cable with wired Sennheiser shotgun for iPhones (MKE 400). No noise when I use the Rode cable to connect my iPhone to two different wireless receivers if I pass the audio by the Rode AI Micro.

The audio on the headphone is crystal clear so the audio leaving both receivers and mixers was always good, even when the end result was the very noisy recording.

And this is my main concern: Imagine if I shoot an important interview and it sounds good on the headphone but when I upload the file I find out the sound is unusable? That reporter I worked with will NEVER call me to work again. Things are bad enough as it is and I really don't need do lose clients because of a cable.

So, if I find out what is causing this most bizarre problem then I can prevent if of happening again. I've contacted Rode and Picogear but so far no luck. I think I might contact Beachtek. Their customer service is excellent but this seems to be mainly a Rode problem. Besides, they are not filmmakers like you and there is nothing better than the experience of the "man in the field".

Hi Simon, I have been looking at the ShiftCam ProGrip Starter Kit - DSLR style mobile battery grip - Wireless Shutter Button - Built in Powerbank - Qi Wireless Charging - Freestanding Dock - Tripod Mount - Works with Android and iPhone but they don't currently make lens filters. The device certainly looks DSLR ish which I find appealing, I wondered if you had a view on the usefulness of this device assuming that you have seen it of course? Thank you for this video which has shown me so many other possibilities.

Good information nicely delivered as usual, thank you. I’ve been getting by with varying success using a simple short tripod that does steady my shooting quite a bit. My monopod has been a cannibalised mounting screw ( from a silly pop-bottle gift) Araldited onto the handle of a broken hiking pole! It was actually not bad for those feet shots and flying through the low vegetation 😅. My issue would be how to get a steady shot on a bicycle. I could easily have fallen off during my park livestream last week as I tried to cycle single-handed with my tripod-mounted iPhone in my left hand. Being 71 tomorrow it’s maybe not something I should be risking😂.

I am just watching your multi phone systems…. really good to watch and I liked the Joby JB01492 Grip Tight One Micro stand due to its minimalist size which I have just ordered. When it comes to the SmallRig - I use the wireless mike Saramonic 500 Pro system with my iPhone 12 pro max. As you will know The thunderbolt connection is quite short! It does work with my Polar Pro case since it is fairly thin walled but unfortunately when I purchased my Moment case I ordered the rugged case which is too thick to accept the Saramonic thunderbolt!! . My question please is do you know if the side walls of the Small rig will be compatible??

how do i make sure they are compatible with each other, i dont want to have a problem when buying an ulanzi lens and discovering later that there are problems when attacting it to a moment case or attaching a lens filter on it, or on how to attach it even.

my question here is, if you're filming from a distance, how far away can you be for the mic to work on your voice? like i.e. you have the shotgun rode or the rode videoMic Mel. I am looking for mics for a short film so in that case i would need something that woldnt pop up on a shirt of an actor but more from a distance. ofcourse if its longer than 10 meters, perhaps you could hide a mic underneath the shirt?

But what do you think? haha

Loved the video btw.
