The first Royal Research Ship commissioned specifically for ocean research was RRS Discovery, in 1925. Discovery had previously served the British National Antarctic Expedition commanded by Captain Robert Falcon Scott 1901-4, so was well-suited for this task.

Tammy Horton, Curator of the Discovery Collections at National Oceanography Centre explains;
"Discovery, like Challenger, collected specimens of marine animals which were recorded and preserved. The Discovery Collections are held by the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton and numbers around 70,000 individual sample jars and over 1 million specimens.
The samples provided here present a selection of the types of samples held in the Discovery Collections at the National Oceanography Centre, from historical samples (jar of nemertean worm specimens collected during the first expeditions to the Southern Ocean in the 1930s), to samples collected as part of ongoing research on ocean biodiversity by the current RRS Discovery."
