I've lived in West Virginia since I was 8, and I want to stay - If I can afford to stay, if I can make a living here. That's what I love about this song - the way it captures that old dilemma that still exists and I face today as well as many of my peers.

My grandfather was a miner in the Western Pennsylvania Coal Mines his entire working life. 6 days a week, 10-12 hours a day.
My dad mined with my g'father from age 14-18 (kids were allowed to quit school after the 8th grade if they got a job to help support the family!). My dad and his parents moved from mining camp to mining camp 11 times in 9 years. They lived in a two room "company house" (read "shack"), and had to buy food and home goods from the "country store"!! G'father died of black lung!! My dad eventually created a very successful life for himself and his family, eventually becoming the General Mgr of Shipping & Receiving at ALCOA's main manufacturing plant in New Kensington, PA. Utah Phillips lyrics ring very true and heartfelt to me!! Thank you Utah!!

This song brings tears to my eyes every time I sing it or listen to it. It’s a ding about a lost home, and anyone whoever lost their home - especially when they were young - understands what it means. Home is that special place where you once truly belonged, a place that exists today only in your memory.
