All you have to do to take care of the debt is to raise taxes on the rich, who don't seem to be paying their fair share of revenue. Mark Blyth, a brilliant economist, has told congress just that. Austerity for the lower classes will not work, it will end in disaster.

The Congressman talked about Illinois debt which is entirely different from the Federal government. States must rely on taxes to spend. The Federal government does not since it has the ability to create money where Illinois does not. This is an apples to oranges debate and is irrelevant. The Federal government does not owe anyone this trillion dollars. It is simply money that was spent and not taken back in taxes. It is exactly the same amount we have in our savings, checking and retirement accounts to the penny. It is not debt but how the government fuels an economy. We can only get dollars if the government spends it.

The national debt is not under the purview of the Federal Reserve. The national debt is a fiscal policy matter. The federal reserve handles monetary policy not fiscal policy. Guess who is in charge of fiscal policy...congress. The national debt is under the purview of congress... the guy who is asking the question and he doesn’t even know that!
