"Garde-robe" wasn't because they kept clothes there - it was what they shouted down the shaft in case anyone else was using the toilet at the same time so the could move. It means "watch your clothes". WARDrobes were closets and armoires.

I wish I knew what movies the clips were from so I can watch them.

OK but I think there's quite a bit of Hollywood fantasy informing some of the ideas here.

You put two illustrations of Roman toilets and only one of a castle when discussing garderobes. They were different. Roman toilets were actually more hygenic.

Spiral staircases didn't always turn the same way though. They were not a good place to fight. Not only were you unable to swing your sword at your enemy because of the narrowness of the space, fighting on the stairs was a very bad idea because the person fighting down was likely to have his legs hacked by the person fighting up, while being unable to land a blow himself without leaning so far forward he would likely lose his balance just to reach even his opponent's head. Castle spiral staircases were much more compact than those shown in your pictures.

Can you just imagine how most people smelled? Even the elites only bathed something like once a week, if that. And even then it's not like the soap was anything like we have today. Then the poor people would probably be lucky to bathe much at all during the winter. At least in the summer they could rinse off in the creek/river/whatever. Although that water may or may not have been exactly clean smelling. Not to mention the lack of tp, or feminine hygiene products. Just seems like most everyone probably stank something fierce. Neat to visit mentally, and learn of the history. But I am so grateful I get to live now with the luxury of hot showers every day, and be around other humans who for the most part have that same luxury as well.

I can't imagine how cold those castles must have been. Even with a bunch of fireplaces going, all that stone might as well be ice when it's crazy cold outside. Plus the high ceilings would make any heat just rise way uo above were the people were. I'm also kinda thinking their weatherstripping wasn't necessarily very effective. Lol. And those large windows without any sort of curtains or anything would certainly transmit the cold in well. But hey, at least you got to worry about being attacked and having to sword fight people all the time. Or get tortured/executed by some asshat king or queen just because of some minor bs that you may not even have been guilty of.

The ice cold toilet seats looked pleasant. 😅 But hey, at least it probably stank so bad that you didn't notice the cold seat.

Imagine the funk smells involved when it came to, um, 'adult time' with your significant other. "Sorry everything smells like an outhouse honey. But hey I'm so excited for you right now." 😆 Yuck! And poor women. Basically zero sorts of feminine hygiene products. Not only would that have been insanely uncomfortable/unpleasant but I'm thinking infections/sickness/disease stuff were probably a big problem. And just think, since no one really understood the whole bacteria thing I would guess hand washing wasn't always a thing after using the restroom. And those are the people being forced to prepare the meals for those 'elites' (aka arrogant asshats). Can you just imagine the kinds of stuff that ended up in the food? I know, I know, extremely disgusting thoughts. But just think, all those people wanting to lose weight, well I'm pretty sure I just destroyed your appetite. So, you're welcome. 😁 No wonder people died at such young ages. They probably wanted to!

Imagine if all the time, money, and effort put into figuring out ways for killing other human beings had instead been put towards advancing things that would benefit people. Like medical stuff, better ways to grow food, etc. But I guess a lot of it was done purely out of necessity seeing as how there have always been people who feel that when someone else has something they're just going to go take it. Even if they have to kill people to accomplish that goal. We really are the worst species. Or at least the trait of greed certainly isn't making us too great.
