One thing I want to ask to whoever designed Norman: WHERE IS EXPLOUD?

Honestly, I've always disagreed with people complaining about: "They shouldn't use this Pokémon because it's not their type specialty." because I think the opposite. I think later Gym Leaders and Elite Four should have one, maybe two Pokémon that aren't their type specialty, as long as they fit the dynamic of their team composition.

I actually think a chinchou or lanturn would be great for Watsons team. It evolves at level 27 so it’s not too far up I think. And water type would be great for dealing with any ground types that trainers would use to beat him.

The main thing to remember about Johto's level curve is that you can fight any of Pryce, Jasmine, and Chuck, in any order - and in fact, you're almost encouraged to choose between either Chuck or Pryce for 5th, since Mahogany is just... surfing the other direction from Ecruteak, where you get Surf. They didn't have the tech to do scaled levelling based on progress yet, so I really wish they had just blocked the path to Mahogany until you'd fought Jasmine.

IMO gym leaders should not have dual types that contain a type that is literally another gym leaders speciality

listen, I know this video is 3 years old but Forretress should've been on Jasmine's team. Scizor is a great pick but I really love the idea of her having two native Johto steel types and two Kanto steel type evos.

I know you only want to talk about composition, but I also have thought for quite a while that Watson could have been a fun double battle. It would have made it harder, for sure, and it overlaps as a “gimmick” for gym leaders, but Plusle and Minun are quite weak and they could have used the Helping Hand strategy to add some difficulty and then ramped it up with Magneton Manetric being the second half. It likely would mean rebalancing the game, but I feel like Plusle and Minun as the gimmick double gym works better for branding and how those Pokemon can be used to be somewhat viable as a strategy. Probably would mean you’d have to shift some ground types ahead of Mauville (maybe have Rusturf Tunnel only be accessible after Brawly and put more ground mons there.

Pyrce and Chuck having similarly leveled teams was intentionally done by game makers. You could challenge Pyrce or Chuck after beating Morty depending on how you wanted to do things. Just in case they anticipated Jasmine might be the 7th leader you challenge so her team is a bit stronger

I wonder if Watson’s Magneton Ace was designed to create the idea that Gym Leaders didn’t need to be tied specifically to the region. Like they were setting up for that to be a regular occurrence so that if a gym leader in a future region used a non-regional Pokémon as their ace it wouldn’t be as weird

I think Gym leaders in game staying true to their anime teams is how it should be
