Back in 1984 my boss (at the time) Mike Chuma got the opportunity to carry the Olympic Torch as it found its way across the US to Los Angeles. It traveled through the Oklahoma City metro area on June 11. On that day, Mike carried the torch for a kilometer in Norman, OK. I videotaped it on my portable Sony Betamax machine with external camera.
Then about 20 years ago or so, I found that cassette with the video, and using the same Betamax machine, which I still had, digitally captured it, and made a DVD, and sent it to Mike, whom I hadn't seen in years. Mike was very appreciative.
Anyway, today I came across that raw captured video I had kept on a data DVD, and I decided to put it into a video that I could upload to Youtube. (Using Adobe Premiere Pro 6.0)
The event itself was pretty awesome. A big crowd and a lot of excitement.
The video setup I had weighed a ton and was very bulky, but it was state-of-the-art at that time. When the run started, I climbed onto the back of the media truck that was running in front of the runners, expecting to be told I wasn't allowed, but no one did. I managed to get the entire kilometer run on tape.
The video quality is poor, of course, because it was an old tape and was being captured with an even older Betamax machine, but it came out pretty good, I think.
I added background music from the "Rocky" movie, "Gonna Fly Now," performed by the Rocky Orchestra, released 6-20-1990, composed and written by Bill Conti. The piece can be heard here:
