Wisdom is essential for Dharma practice - Sakya Trichen (41st Sakya Trizin)

When we have all the necessary favorable conditions that it is very important to utilize this without any delay and without any failures, we must take the essence out of this precious human life. And now how to take the essence out of this precious life – is to practice the holy Dharma. And to practice the holy Dharma you need faith, faith with the logical reasons which means faith with wisdom. Because without wisdom it’s not possible. As Nagarjuna’s Ratna Mala says: «Wisdom is the first one, second is the faith». So therefore, wisdom is very important.

The causes of suffering in samsara are two: karma and the defilements. The karma alone couldn’t take us to samsara. The main cause are the defilements. The root of the defilements is self-clinging, the ignorance of not realizing the selflessness, which is ignorance. So, to free from suffering of samsara you need wisdom. Wisdom that goes directly against self-clinging thought. We need wisdom, wisdom that realizes selflessness. And with that you can cut the root of samsara. And then you are free from samsara.
