In After Effects start with a 4-color gradient effect background. Mix and choose any colors that you want.
Then create an adjustment layer. Apply the Motion Tile Effect.
Set the Output width and height to 300 and set mirror edges to on.
On apply turbulent displace.
Set the amount to 30 – size to 1000 and complexity to 10. Also, alt-click the stop watch for evolution and type time*100.
Now apply CC Smear. Set the reach to -100 and the radius to 1000. Now key frame the from and to Properties to distort your background.
Feel free to duplicate the effect and create another smear animation.
Lastly, add the twirl effect. Animate the angle and set the twirl radius to 50.
