The issue as i see it is not so much about PC going too far, rather it's a problem of the weaponisation of PC by a vocal minority of left-wing activists. The sort of culture Chris refers to is very much the current incarnation of a puritanical authoritarian mindset that has manifested itself many times on both sides of the political spectrum.

In the recent past, the dominant practitioners were from the more evangelical parts of the religious right, seeking to censor or ban those whom they found objectionable, often brandishing accusations of blasphemy and devil worshipping while virtue signalling their intentions to protect the children. Now we have a culture in which we see some of the more hyper-woke parts of the progressive left using similar tactics to shame or cancel their opponents, brandishing labels like racism and bigotry while virtue signalling their intentions of protecting oppressed groups.

The changing nature of social discourse has played a role in this partisan flip, religion no longer holds the monopoly on righteousness. Hashtag activism provides an easy way to rally up a mob without requiring them to commit any physical effort. While legacy media needed to sell papers, clicks are now their revenue source and with so many people caught up in idealogical echo chambers, profits are made by generating frequent outrage with the relevant exaggerated biases tailored for each group.

All of this serves to further polarise people into an increasingly tribalistic form of politics where actually meaningful topics such as policy itself are all too often overshadowed by an obsession around a handful of forbidden words.
