It's a brilliant moment. But, it was only recently I realised that the preamble, as he walks along the side of the Saturn V rocket, is a separate scene, with the final few seconds edited in at the end.

That is not Hydrogen if it was the flame would be Blue and most Hydrogen is made from Natural Gas or Cow Farts.

Uh, well, no, not quite. The first stage of the Saturn V was fueled by RP-1 (basically a highly refined version of Kerosene) with liquid oxygen as the oxidizer. The second and third stages were indeed fueled by liquid hydrogen with liquid oxygen as the oxidizer. The launch behind Burke was a Titan III-Centaur (Titan IIIE) and what you see below is mostly the exhaust of the two solid strap-on rocket boosters on either side of the Titan II core vehicle.

Dear internet, Wernher Von Braun was a top Nazi scientist who built the rockets Hitler used to bomb Europe. He was among the murderers that CIA secretly smuggled into America after WWII to build rockets.

James Burke spoke about the set up of this shot at Bluedot Festival in 2019. He said:

"The great thing about NASA is 99.9% of the time it does what it says it's going to do, like launches.

And so the walk down the side of the rocket is much longer and I wrote that and did that and then that last cut where you cut to a tight shot of, in the distance, an out of focus rocket and I walk in, I wrote ten seconds of words.

It takes one second to walk in, so that's eleven, it takes one second to point, one second to pull focus so that you focus the rocket. And the rocket goes. So it's thirteen seconds. And  we could hear the countdown coming from the loudspeakers, so at thirteen seconds to go I stepped in and did my bit.

We took it home and said to the BBC, "Look what we did!" and they said, "Yeah, it looks like back projection."

(Bluedot uploaded the interview clip to their Twitter channel on 28 October 2019)

Of course you realize, James Burke, that Wernher von Braun and his Peenemünde German expats landed American astronauts on the moon very close to a mere 25 years to the hour after Baron von Stauffenberg 's unsuccessful coup attempt resulted in his summary execution at the Bendler
block in Berlin on July 20th 1944 about midnight. Such coincidences or synchronicities bring tears to the eyes of us history buffs, don't they?
