George Washington was actually the 14th president. Before him each state had a president rather than a governor and they served for one year. They were also called Mr President but technically George Washington is the first legal president that wasn't the governor. They didn't have governor's back then they had presidents of each state. After the declaration of Independence they elected president of each state.
