Heard the word in Donnie Brasco recently and it really confused me, always thought it was just what you explained, coming from the Vietnam War experience. But it apparently also means fake or crummy quality in Italian (or maybe just Italian-American, not sure). slang.

I've never heard that meaning of the word Fugazi anywhere outside the bands use of it. I'm Sicilian and black from NYC and we use fugazi almost daily but it always meant something was fake, fraudulent, counterfeit, inauthentic, a copy, etc, and on rare occasion an ol head might use it to mean that something is damaged, chaotic, broken, impossible, etc.

And we always pronounced it foo-gaze-eee.

Even asked some Vietnam survivors and they never heard it to mean anything else. Always wondered if it was just mad niche or if that author made it up or was being toyed with by GI's.

Either way, one of the most important bands of all time! The members have been involved in some of the most influential punk, hardcore, OG emo, post-hc, and a slew of other bands spanning different genres and subgenres. Its almost an accidental supergroup. Lightening in a bottle.

I think the explanation of the word from the Vietnam war might be a 'backronym'- a thing where people make up an acronym for a word that's already in circulation. It seems a bit contrived. The movie Donnie Brasco has Italian American characters describing a fake diamond as 'a fugazi' in the 1970's, although it was made in the 90's and I don't really know if it's historically accurate. One of the all-time great bands, though. So glad I got to see them a couple of times.
