Those weren't flat sixes. They were flat eights with double overhead cams. They were actually 2/3rd of a 917 engine. According to a Chris Economacki (I think) segment I saw years ago, Porsche moved the driving position forward somewhat and the cars raised the average speed by 20 mph.

Oh such happy memories....was it the '71 race when JW had 4x908's. each with a playing card deck symbol (hearts, spades, etc) so they could be recognised in the mountains? These guys are my heroes.....my ambition is to go to Sicily and drive the old course in a road car, not only to say Ive done it, but in homage to the drivers in the times when this was truly the most dangerous course (closely followed by the old Nurburgring, another unfulfilled ambition to drive round) Viva Nino Vaccarella!

John Wyer was an ace. Wonderful human being. Highly organized, as he had to be, along with his entire crew including engineer John Horsman. Wyer and his crew also helped the Cobras when they ran Europe in 1964. He was tough-minded, but his crew respected him and backed him up all the way. The kind of leader and friend you hope to have. God bless you John Wyer.
