Hi Sean! Could you list some tips on how you realized that acute care NP was your preferable field? I've been looking at some NP programs and I found adult-gerontology vs acute care adult-gerontology vs family NP and its very confusing to me. What made you choose acute care? And what unit did you work in and find most helpful prior to entering NP school?
Thank you, Sue

Grad school is very expensive. So please do not create any extra bills for yourself. Save as much money as you can. That vacation trip or new car can wait until you are finished. You may have to take time off from work to study and the extra savings will come in handy. Take it from me, a 3rd semester np student. 😋

OMG - Soooo true, Advanced Patho was the hardest class. I AGREE! And yes, life as you know it ends. I worked full time during NP school and now that I have graduated ( well until DNP hopefully next year) am now just coming back to life. Literally driving around my town asking " when did that building come into existence?", when the hell did you have a baby?, who got divorced? Ohhh that's right, you're my spouse - when did you get gray hair LOL.

What advice I can give. Be prepared that your life for the next 2.5 - 3 years is literally going to be school, school and more school. I literally had days where I studied for 10 plus hours ( I know crazy but true). I missed more parties, birthdays, family events, etc. I literally left a wedding early, right after the kiss, to go home and study. LOL I slept with my books! Prepare your spouse if you have one (luckily my spouse is a professor so completely understood and supportive) Prepare your family. Prepare your friends - you will be saying no a lot. Learn how to fail to succeed. Understand that grad school will ask you to think differently - it's not the fundamentals as was undergrad. Know APA like your know yourself - Intimately!

Good luck to all of you going on for your Advanced Practice Degree!

So,... I just finished my BSN 4 days ago and I'm considering the FNP program. Thanks for the video. I feel that your warnings are fair, which are about as intimidating as I figured the program to be. I've been in psych nursing for the last 11 years, so I'm feeling like I'll need lots of review. I haven't done any form of med/surg in 15+ years.

Hi Sean! I totally agree with your thought that once the NP master program starts, there will be no more time for those students to hang out with family members and friends. So, same as your advice, I would suggest those students to treasure the time prior to the NP master program begins in the fall semester by having some or more relaxing chatting time with their family members and friends when they need. *-^

I start the DNP program next month. Worked as a researcher, so hopefully I've got that part down. Actually started brushing up on patho a few weeks ago. Here's to another adventure! Thanks for the tips!

Advanced pathophysiology was hard but advanced pharmacology is very very hard? How did you get through that? You are not kidding about the self directed study! The application of critical thinking is the hardest part. Get ready for the curve balls! They hit hard and in places you dont expect.

Don't nurses actually have to have working experience before becoming NPs? They are finishing BSNs then going right to a grad program?
