I am David Pollendine, Director of Development in the Prairies for IJM Canada. I am here in 2021 to give you some updates about how IJM’s work of protecting the poor from violence is continuing into this New Year and during these challenging days of Covid 19.
IJM protecting poor from violence in 3 ways

1. Immediate response – Helping people affected by C-19 now – Going to Guatemala
During Covid-19 there have been many challenges to deal with for our field work around the world. Lockdowns have meant investigations and rescues have been more difficult to carry out and where rescues have taken place accessing shelters for aftercare or carrying court cases forward has been a challenge

2. Near term response – Continuing to do investigations and put on rescue operations – For this we are going to South Asia
In IJM’s first global rescue operation of the year, our team in India supported local authorities to free 41 people from bondage at a railway construction site in Odisha state. This included 13 young children who lived at the site with their parents

3. Long term response – Partnering with governments to protect the poor from violence and slavery – For this I am focusing on a campaign here we are committed to here with the Canadian Government.
Over past 3 years we have been supporting The All-party Parliamentary Group to End Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking to bring in legislation that requires companies to be transparent in regard to slave labour in their supply chains.
