How Good Is LAER In Fallout New Vegas?

Elijah's laer gave me a "cardiac arrest" the moment I started firing.

That feeling when you're fighting a deathclaw with the Elijah's laer and the gun is almost broken after the 3rd shot

The sonic wave emitter is what you can buy from the sink. I think there's only like 6 or 7 laers without mods

It seems to have a slight travel time to the projectile, but still much much faster than the plasma weapons. Absolutely great weapons if you can keep them maintained, which isn’t difficult to do.

I'd say this fits a similar niche in Energy Weapons that the Assault Carbine does for Guns as a mid range weapon for firing fast and not necessarily very accurately. As I play on survival mode I try and avoid mid range fights as trading shots doesn't work very well with the kind of damage you take in that mode. Even if you kill them faster, if you're exposing yourself to 2-3 enemies firing back, it's just not a good trade.

Owb becomes a joke even on very hard once you get your hands on the LAER, it's so strong.

It’s fugly, has terrible aesthetics, and it’s not better than the holorifle.

It's a best gun for Arcade or Veronica, actually. Weapons don't degrade when companions use 'em, so you can just give max cells to a companion for maximum efficiency. It's even more ridiculous if you run 10 charisma build, Veronica/Arcade kills anything in seconds.

It's my go to gun but I hate going to repair Elijah's all the time. Just drains caps.

Who doesn't like particle beam weapon. All in all this isn't that great a weapon IMO. The fragility would put it down a whole tier for me

"LAER mod - prismatic lens" (Beam Splitter), when applied on LAER, actually SPLITS the beam into 3 beams. I'm literally looking at the game files responsible for this right now. So, no, it doesn't double the damage. The damage is still +30% for each beam. It still works incorrectly, though, as the mod is intended to split the beam into 2 beams (not 3).

The same mod applied to "Elijah's Advanced LAER" does not split the beam. It just increases the damage by 30%.

So, LAER is better for low-DT targets (as each beam crits independently and these +15 crit damage actually starts to matter), while Elijah's LAER is better for a high-DT targets, as DT will be subtracted just once.

Anyway, above I described how it works in vanilla. But no one should play FNV in 2024 without at least Yukichigai's Unofficial Patch (YUP) that fixes both LAER and Elijah's Advanced LAER and million other things. At least on the PC. If someone is playing FNV on a console, then, I'm sorry, as they are missing so much.

What YUP does specifically for LAER and Elijah's LAER: Beam Splitter now correctly splits beam into 2 beams (with +30% damage for each). Also it returns spread back to LAER if the mod is applied (in vanilla the mod incorrectly has a multiplier of 0 that is applied to weapon spread). For Elijah's LAER it also fixes the second mod (that regenerates ammo) so it starts to actually do something (in Vanilla it does nothing when applied to Elijah's LAER, but works fine on a basic LAER).

Doesn't it also have a big bonus damage against robots and power armor?

This is one of my favorite energy weapons. It's a ritual to grab this on an energy weapons build.

How do you think it stacks up against the ycs gauss rifle? I tend to find it better overall

they are strong but I never use them. I tend to prefer plasma.

They're nice but by the time i go to OWB I already have the holoriffle of another thing for all purpose, they appear simply too late

I always looked at this weapon as the in-between the laser and plasma rifle. I usually don't end up using it because I'd rather use the unique plasma rifle or the laser rifle with all the mods on it.

i use elijahs fully modded to destroy an enemy very fast or the regular one then for repairs there are the kits from dead money and also ED-E who can repair the gun and provide ammo for it. It's the closest we can get to an energy riot shotgun in pure dps

I will gladly use laser weapons the day they make peace with proper sights.

The prismatic lense does split the beam on the regular LAER but they're essentially touching just like with the laser rifle but they aren't as strong against armor since it now counts as two seperate hits. With Elijah's Advanced LAER it just gets the damage bonus with no downside making Elijah's LAER better.

This is my primary weapon for NV

LAER is basically just a better Laser Rifle and with the beam splitter it's a better Tri-Beam Laser Rifle. It's crit damage is lower but makes up for it by having much higher base damage.

However, you missed something critical with Elijah's LAER. Which is that the Beam Splitter does not split the beam at all. Instead of splitting the beam it ends up simply applying the damage boost to the singular beam. Making it significantly better against high DT targets since the Beam Splitter makes the regular LAER's damage split between all the beams so it becomes less useful against high DT. So no, it is not a downgrade of the LAER, but rather serves a different purpose. (This was possibly done intentionally) Because of the effects of the beam splitter with this unique version it makes the Medicine Stick and Survivalist Rifle look like pushovers.

If you plan on running these weapons then having Raul and ED-E is a must. Raul reduces equipment degradation by 50% (75% if you complete his quest) and ED-E can be upgraded to give a free repair. Can also give a damage boost for laser weapons.

Maybe the second strongest laser rifle after ycs 186 less powerful than this but easier to use.
Still both guns are pain to repair compare to q35 for example.

Ah yes, the layer

One of the best all purpose guns, outside of it's flimsy nature. Easy access to repair kits or jury rigging perk are needed though.
It fires fast enough as a semi auto, it hits solidly hard, it's accurate enough at range, 20 round clip is more then enough for how hard it hits, it's just good!

It's all about the holorifle for me. The gauss rifle is technically more powerful but more of a pain to use unless sniping.

been doing a run where I'm basically only using stuff I find in the DLCs to clear it, like what happens with dead money, and the LAER was a god send for being able to take stuff down, before then the best I had was a crap plasma pistol or the laughably bad sonic emitter
