On April 21, 1836, just under two months since the siege on the alamo, at San Jacinto, Sam Houston and some 800 Texans defeated Santa Anna's Mexican force of 1,500 men, yelling "Remember the Alamo!" as they attacked. The victory guaranteed the success of Texan independence. Taken as a prisoner, Santa Anna eventually came to terms with Houston to end the war. In May, Mexican troops in San Antonio were ordered to withdraw, and to destroy the Alamo's fortifications as they withdrew. Texas in 1845, joined the United States. Many years later, the U.S. Army stored supplies and stationed troops at the Alamo. In 1883, the state of Texas bought the Alamo, which gave them property rights to all it's surrounding areas. Since 1905, The Daughters of the Republic of Texas, a women's assembly including descendants of the earliest residents of Texas, has maintained the Alamo. Today, more than 2.5 million people a year visit the 4.2-acre historical site.
