Come and walk across Tokyo's Rainbow Bridge with me! This iconic bridge was opened in 1993 and is 798 meters (2,618 ft) in total length. The span of the bridge is 580 meters (1,903 ft).
Along the bridge are two pedestrian walkways, one on the north side and one on the south side. The north side faces Tokyo's beautiful skyline and gives you great views of Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Skytree Tower, and several of Tokyo's inner harbor Wards. The south side faces Haneda Airport, Odaiba, and the rest of Tokyo Bay.
The Rainbow Bridge carries three transportation lines on two decks. The upper deck carries the Shuto Expressway's Daiba Route, while the lower deck carries the Yurikamome rapid transit system in the center, walkways on the outer side, and Tokyo Prefectural Route 482 in between.
It is free to walk across the bridge. The walkways may only be used during certain hours (9 am to 9 pm in the summer; 10 am to 6 pm in the winter, access to the walkways close 30 minutes before closing time.) Bicycles are permitted on the condition that they are pushed (as opposed to riding them).
After crossing the bridge, we check out Daiba Park, an island that was built in 1854 as one of several batteries built for coastal defenses after the arrival of U.S. Navy Commodore Matthew C. Perry in 1853. Remnants of stone cannon pedestals, ammunition storehouses, and barracks can still be seen at the park.
We then stroll along Daiba Beach, an actual sand beach in Tokyo city, before we hop on the Yurikamome Line back towards Shimbashi Station.
