These hives are located on private property in Ada, MI. The homeowner sent us pictures and we noticed significantly more dead bees and bee poop than the rest of our colonies. We aren't entirely sure why these colonies look different the the rest, but we suspect that it has to do with them being located in the woods. In all of our other apiaries, our colonies get full sun which allows the boxes to warm up and the bees become active. During this active time, the bees can clean up the bottom board and remove their dead. However, the hives in the woods are well protected from the sun, thus they experience little to no solar gain. This prevents the boxes from warming, thus preventing the bees from becoming active. This could be why these colonies have not cleaned off their bottom boards yet. We will continue to monitor them as we get closer to the spring, but overall we suspect they will be just fine.
