You mention the horns and all of the instrumentation that Steely Dan employs.. The had full access to the infamous LA Wall of Sound. Much like many had with "The Swampers" in Muscle Shoals I'm the late '60's and '70's. A truly magical time for music!

I just want to say I enjoy your channel but in this song when you stop the song where you did? You broke the continuity right at the point when he says California tumbles into the sea. The horn section totally emulated tumbling into the sea complete with a PLOP at the end. It went by completely unnoticed because you stopped the song. music has a continuity that sometimes shouldn't be broken even for commentary. Maybe go back and listen to that again. Cheers! Smiles.

thr great itme about steely dan is that really did not have a regular band, guys who stayed around in studio or tour.. they used hundreds of musicins over the years a the two leaders donald fagan was very particuar about who came in to play.. they would bring in for example a tenor sax or a drummer and let them go the same day because they could not get it right.

Donald Fagen and Walter Becker were Steely Dan and after the first album they became a studio musicians band of who's who... in the world of music. They would bring in different studio musicians on every song on every album and mix and match different players as they wanted to tailor orchestrate each song. The best of the best played on Steely Dan songs.

Steely Dan is really 2 guys, Donald (Keys) and Walter (Guitar). They used the best studio musicians from jazz and all other genres. At first they didn't tour. That changed later after the demand got so big. This is NYC music at it's finest!

Production Values! I can think of no one more driven for quality in their music than Becker and Fagan. Absolute fanatic of these guys since 1970. And still am. Every note, every word, every song every album (and the ONLY duo/group I have in cassette, vinyl, CD, DVD.)

The sound of Steely Dan is from Fagen & Becker surrounding themselves with the best studio musicians in Rock.

Donald Fagan is a genius. Steely Dan is totally underrated. Absolutely the greatest band of all time. The loss of dear Walter Becker can't be underestimated. Steely Dan reminds me of the blessing of being in high school during the 1970s. Y'all it was the BEST! Never to be repeated - and I was immersed in the greatest bands of all time!! Love You Rob Squad. Keep 'em coming!
