Microsoft needs to ditch Xbox console and just create their own prebuilt "console PC" with a dedicated set-in-stone spec around which Xbox store games will be optimized for. And if Windows 10 is not stable enough, create a dedicated Xbox mode with locked driver management that's independent of any user tweaks made in the Windows 10 OS, and limit, lock and maybe even hibernate the OS during the Xbox mode. In-game graphic options for Xbox store sold games would have a "Run in Xbox mode" checkbox, enabled by default, but also the option to disable it to display the usual, complicated PC graphic settings that PC game releases normally have. This would add zero additional development work for game devs compared to how PC and Xbox are made now. However, you could also run the games in normal Windows mode in case you want to run background tasks or use mods and tweaks, but where best performance is not guaranteed. (Also, Microsoft NEEDS to remove the extremely oppressive, DRM and data obfuscation from its current Windows store games that just makes tinkering with the games hard for absolutely no reason.)

Make 2 Xbox PCs: One that is cheap to manufacture for value gamers, similar to how consoles are currently made, and an elite version with maybe +10-20% specs for (just bit of extra multitasking and performance headroom that might help but not be perfectly utilized), quality parts that run cool and quiet and reliable, more IO capability and upgrade potential for the PC enthusiasts that don't mind paying more for better.

The advantage consoles have always had is running things optimized at a defined spec. PC gamers having to research parts and pretty much engineer their own PC and then adjust game settings to run efficiently at my special PC specs is a clear disadvantage for PC users who just want to play. With huge mass production, there would definitely be a cost advantage too to consoles. Especially with next gen consoles, I would buy one if I didn't have to give up the freedom and capabilities of PC. I don't want an artificially limited walled garden. If making it free can't compete with Steam and GOG etc. then that just proves it's not competitive. But I would be more than happy to pay for a one click hassle-free experience for games, knowing it will run well and look good with the streamlined machine that I've got at good price. With Microsoft being the owner of Windows, it would be entirely possible for them to create an Xbox that's MORE than a PC, without being any less. That would be a complete gamechanger against PS5 for people who also want a capable desktop PC and not just a game console.

There are still a lot of console gamers with 1080p TVs and not a lot of HDMI 2.1 4k 120hz TVs in the market. A huge attraction for early PS5 gen will be benefits to 1080p gaming - whether it be super sampling, patches for better frame rates or current gen visuals with smoother frame rates.than PS4 Pro.

Destruction Derby and Wipeout appeared on other consoles before Sony bought Psygnosis and their IPs, after which Psygnosis became Sony Liverpool, and games like Wipeout, Destruction Derby and Colony Wars became exclusive to Playstation.

Agile is not chaos, only some people think this way, and do this way. If you do something new, and with new game is this way, there are many unknown problems, you do not know they exist, until you meet them, so if you make whole plan, and meet this problem, you are fuck up, because he wasn't in your plan, best case scenario: small delay, worst case: rest of plan go to garbage, and you writing new (many times you heard about restart of production, this is it).
When you working In agile, you should aim at full product first (prototype), only to works from start to end, check if it possible, or you get some unknown problems, and next build on it, build in order how of important is for customer. If process is long, split it in many parts and build basic version one by one, connect them, check parts which are most unknown, so you would know if this is possible. Your goal is to make product which customer want, not realising your plan.

Commercial gaming hardware that supports partial real-time Ray-Tracing and AI Up-sampling (an estimate):
2018 nothing (AFAIK)
2019 RTX2000 series (less than 1% of the PC gaming market)
2020 RTX2000, RTX3000, AMD RDNA 2 and several MILLION gaming consoles
...
2023 PC + Console total around 100 MILLION systems?
So people dismissed ray-tracing as a gimmick but it was always going to have growings pains. But not only will the number of systems supported grow significantly in just a few years, but also games aren't "ported" like they used to be between consoles. The core architecture is so similar that most console games should come to the PC so even if the ray-tracing install base on PC might not warrant the extra work for a lot of games, the hard work would already be done for a console version so including it as an option wouldn't be terribly difficult... here's an example of how CONSOLE'S are helping PC gaming a lot...
You get the feature first on PC but then you get a tonne of consoles that support it and make it far more worthwhile investing in the technology. Same applies for AI upsampling, VRS, SSD streaming (not simple load benefits) and other features that the new consoles support.

Bravo, the way I've seen the Xbox/PS5 battle was as if it's 2 guys comparing stuff, Xbox shouting I have the biggest while PS5 is quietly saying yes but I know how to use what I have. Way too much emphasis on teraflops and things that most average users have no concept of anss probably dont care so long as gameplay is smooth and it looks good. It felt to me that MS isn't really all that bothered if you buy the new console they are more interested in games as a service, I hope they dont sacrifice quality games over quantity. Personally after seeing what has been offered by both companies I will probably invest in PS5 and get gamepass for my PC that way I get the best of both worlds, I honestly see no reason to purchase a Series One. Ps whoever came up with Xbox naming conventions should be sacked and banned from ever naming a child.

The way that the ps5 is being built it can use a certain amount of
compute units more efficiently than ever before. Think of it as, it
renders a slice of the visible world with extremely high detail while
constantly loading large amounts of data off the ssd that we have never
been able to do before so they can cram more detail they can load in is
way higher and seamless then any Hard drive has ever been able to do. It
will literally take off the training wheels last gen games had. Ratchet
and Clank showed it really well, and this is just the infancy of the
tech, just wait until devs get really well versed in this style of
creation. The sky is the limit here.

People need to stop bitching. Live and let live guys. We’re all gamers, no matter what we play games on. Shouldn’t matter if you’re on PC or console, let’s promote cross play and just get on with it.

Brilliant podcast as always. That said, have either one of you really, and I mean really, sat down with the story of TLOU2. Additionally, good sales do not always speak to the quality of said product. Also, critiques should never be halted, just because it may hurt someone's feelings. Frankly speaking, I don't think either one of you have done any substantive research on this particular subject.

You can absolutely enjoy TLOU2, just as people enjoy the new Star Wars films, that's perfectly alright. What you cannot do is tell people who can spot the flaws, to fuck off and be in their respective corners. "Don't criticize someone because they worked on something for X amount of years," seems to be a fairly absurd thing to say.

As for TLOU2 being a technical marvel, there is no question of it, and those critiquing the game shouldn't hesitate to state that fact. When it comes to the story, however, it is an objectively flawed story. TLOU2 is no different the the new Star Wars films, it may come across as something great with your first viewing, but on your second and third viewing, it becomes increasingly difficult to ignore its flaws.

For reference, I would suggest looking at some deep dives into the matter. Mauler and the EFAP crew have some prescient critiques on this.

Pc gamers are so sad. 2 months ago there was NO WAY a console could compete with a rtx 2080 super or even there $1700 TI!!! But then here comes nvidia releasing a card 30% faster in games than the 2080ti for $700. Why? Because they know AMD with rdna2 had closed the performance per teraflop in 1440-4k gaming. I wouldn’t be surprised if these new 30 series cards with all their shaders and flops, are less efficient than the rdna2 cards. Just look at the rx5700. A 7.9 teraflop card that can hold its own against a 2060 super. Similar price, similar teraflop. Now amd is calling for an additional 50% efficiency bump with rdna2 over 1.0. If that is true you’re going to see cards with lower teraflops, lower power draws, pulling higher fps than 30 series cards for cheaper. The fuckin series x just might be an entire system that costs less THAN A THIRD of the 2080 ti and has similar performance!

The ps5 and series x are the first consoles since ps3 and 360 to ship with top shelf pc products. The average pc gamer doesn’t game with these r9 i9 2080 tis. They game with the gtx 1070. Rtx 2060. They run mid range systems and the ps5 and series x are going to OUT PERFORK THE AVERAGE PC GAMING RIG

Do you think that series x will be able to do what ubisoft said it would, with theyre game ? They said that in Rainbow six siege would do "up to 4k 120fps", and they wrote "4k at 120fps" on Twitter.

Is this possible with the hardware, and the features we know about series x ? I would like if this is true. I mean is it native/true 4k ? Just want somebody with knowledge on the subject to answer me on this 😊

Even something as simple as pulling up the dev menu required a simple .ini edit. Of course now 95% of the time they bury the dev console because they want to sell things via microtransactions. Ridiciulous. It also came in handy when you'd get stuck in beetween the door and the ground regardless of restartsd via saves. That menu has saved me on numerous occasions.

9 Months later, and its incredile how accruate your two estimations were for the performance in games.
114:40 "i don't think you're gonna see a big difference most of the time you will always have edge cases"
116:22 "but on the flip side, I also wouldn't be surprised to see ps5 perform better on certain games, I think that the the technology in terms of how it's been designed, the infrastructure, and again i bring it back to the APIs, there's more than that, but the APIs are a big important part of it. A nine percent CPU difference could easily be hand waved away by an API benefit, absolutely, A 15%, 18% GPU deficit could easily, 20%, could easily be hand waved away by an API benefit in terms of early day development.
Tom:
Right see, and that's what i wonder is i think it's a combination of i mean if you just look at the raw specs i think it's obvious the xbox at least in linear games should be able to run at, at least 10 percent higher resolution. So dynamic resolution you'll see those digital foundry, or your analysis, where they go: "oh you know it's running slightly higher resolution most of the time", i think that's obvious, but at the same time it's like every developer i talk to says the dev kits for the playstation are easier to work with and that it takes less time to work on."

Honestly I wonder if it's just the tech sector not following politics at all because wow this whole conversation sounds so uninformed for 2015 let alone 2020. Also Naughty Dog was a good place to work? Holy shit how have you not seen the shitshow thats come out from Schrier/Yongyea and other gaming/politics channels?
This really worries me you both speak so matter of factly when its so completely completely out of touch, and I'm hoping its just because its "not your area".
