A lively crowd gathers to watch a steam tram leave Wigan Market Place in August 1902.
The tram is being filmed by Mitchell and Kenyon, a pioneering film company. The crowd is encouraged to respond to the camera, but they don't need much encouragement. They are clearly fascinated by the new technology.
The film was shown in August 1902 as part of the town's celebrations of Edward VII's coronation in Wigan Town Hall in August 1902. Forming part of a 2 hour film show called “Life In Wigan”.
People wave, cheer and laugh at the camera as a tram worker playfully tries to clear them out of the way by spraying them with water. The camera pans to follow the tram as it disappears down the hill. It passes over women in shawls, men smoking, men waving their hats and a little girl in a bonnet being held aloft. There is a sign on the side of the tram that indicates the route: Wigan - Newtown - Pemberton. It will be heading up Ormskirk Road.
The tram network, which closed in the 1930s, ran to Wigan Pier. By 1902, the Wigan Corporation had taken full control of the town's tram network and had begun a programme of electrification.
The film provides a fascinating glimpse into life in Wigan at the turn of the 20th century. It is a reminder of a time when trams were a vital part of everyday life.

It's a few months since I colourised a film, it's still a slow inaccurate process with mixed results, note the changing colours of the tram and the people and the blue faced people. :D There has been no advancement of the AI in this particular area. At one point the AI suggested the tram steam engine should be red, I went with this without checking the historic record, it mistook the steam engine for a "firetruck". I suspect the engines were likely blue. Anyway, I was too far in to the colouring process to change the colour. Plus, the red helps to dramatise the scene, contrasting as it does with the more muted colours elsewhere. So I claim artistic licence :D You will find other versions of this clip online but none as clear, tone balanced, sharp and well coloured.
