In Jamaica we don’t even know the maker or the country that the pencil is from but once it’s a yellow No:2.5 it’s considered the best pencil ✏️

My guess would have been very simple. School buses are yellow and pencils are a school staple for young kids and for tests for older kids.

Pencils originated from the word " penis" - tail . Early pencils were fine brushes from the word peniculus -" to paint with a fine brush " . Early miniature painter's describe using " pencils " in their art of " limning ".

"WRITE ON!": I am a common pencil ✏️. Made of wood and paint and lead. There is also a small metal cylinder wrapped around my head. I can write down anything you can think or say. If you make a mistake, I have an eraser and I can erase it all away. I am also an artist. I can draw a picture of any kind. Animals, flowers, people too. Whatever 'you have in 'mind. Now most kids, they don't like me. Because when they go to school. They have to write down lots of words. Because it's a very important rule. Especially when it comes to math. That's the hardest one of all. When they get stumped, they put me between their teeth and naw and naw and naw. What I'm trying to say in an awkward sort of way is I'm a very useful tool. Used by kids and even grownups. And 'yes even a common fool. By that I mean. Please don't use me to write bad words upon a bathroom wall. Or write a note to hold up a bank. That's against the law. When properly used I can help mankind. Keeping a list of every thought. Writing them down word for word so they will never be forgot. You know it really takes a lot of time to make me what I am. Thousands of people and a lot of work. Together gram by gram. Six or seven to be exact. With good use I'm down to one. But I don't mind slowly disappearing. As long as I did a job well done. Isn't it amazing though how I help fill your head with knowledge. I hope my time was not wasted by you not getting into college. But all in all I'm very proud of what I am, as you can plainly see. Because after 'all. Though I am quite 'small. I come from a very large family "tree."

I think it's important to acknowledge that there might be another, darker reason that a company run by white people in the 19th century might have used yellow to associate their product with China. Not to mention the later company shown in the video that used the brand name "Mongol". An unfortunate connection, to be sure, but it's also nice to note that we've moved so far past it that most people don't particularly even recognize it anymore.

Faber-Castell pencils are/were usually green, so when you dropped them on the grass it took a long time to find them again! As a student doing fieldwork, this happened to me and I sent 2 hours searching for the pencil which had to be somewhere near my feet. No luck, so I dip fieldwork pencils in fluoro yellow paint to avoid that problem.

I wonder how much the original colour of pencils has shifted from what was originally some kind of regal-feeling Chinese gold-yellow shade and what those shade changes show, if anything. I've seen everything from near neon yellow to an orange that's pretty earthy and mustard-brown in wood pencil. I always assumed the bright colour was meant to keep tradespeople from losing them when they fell on job sites. An important note - none of this colour association has transferred to mechanical pencils. Don't these originate in Japan or China too? not that that necessarily would make them likely to be golden yellow, but it's an interesting note, if we expand the wood pencilhistory into the present day, where they are at least as popular.

Gilbert pencils are red as are the thick, flat pecils that are used in the wood and carpentry industry, the octagonal-shaped Caran d'Ache double zero drawing pencils I used were two shades of green (dark on the flat bit, light on the ridges). In fact, I've never ever bought or even seen a drawing pencil that was yellow.
