Atyrau (until 1992 — Guryev) is a city in the European part of Kazakhstan, the administrative center of the Atyrau Region. It is located in the western part of the country, on the bank of the Ural River (at its foundation it was located at the mouth of the river into the Caspian Sea, but moved away from it as a result of the fall in the level of the Caspian). One of the largest cities in Western Kazakhstan.
