Couldn't you have just gotten closer with the 50mm? Would it have looked the same as the 85mm?

You could also move the camera closer to the subject...

Blurred background is overrated. Yes you can get object separation without context easier, but wide angle lenses give you perspective separation while also giving you context. The greats preferred wide angle lenses but they were also the masters of composition. Long lenses have their place however. But it's not always obvious.

35mm but it was a toss up for that and 85 lol

What about a 105 or 85?
