Once buried beneath decades of neglect, the Bansilalpet Stepwell in Hyderabad, built in the 17th century, stands today as a testament to both history and human perseverance.
But like many historical structures, the Bansilalpet Stepwell gradually faded from memory. Over time, it was filled with garbage, debris, and even encroachments, becoming nothing more than a dumping ground. For decades, this once-essential resource was hidden, waiting to be rediscovered.
In 2021, a large-scale restoration project was launched, led by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and other civic bodies, alongside historians, architects, and conservationists. The task was monumental. The well had been buried under 2,000 tons of debris, and illegal constructions had to be removed from the surrounding area. The restoration effort aimed not only to revive the structure but also to reconnect the city with its forgotten heritage.
