“91 developed cancer of 221 cast and crew, and about 45 died of it,”. That is totally….the AVERAGE US cancer rate, which according to the SEER epidemiology statistics, is that HALF of the US population will get cancer at some point (50% lifetime risk) and about 25% of Americans die of cancer. So by the numbers, there was NOTHING unusual about that level of cancer….it is basically right at the US average risk.

It only seems unusual as people tend to underestimate how common cancer is, or to only focus on the cancers that don5 have good treatments yet, and not count the many cancers that are now fairly treatable.

Even people back in the day thought this was awful. As much as i like his other movies, John Wayne worst movie would have to be this one alongside The Green Beret's, In Harm's Way and The Alamo.

Howard Hughes hated this movie so much that he would spend millions of dollars to get all the copies he could that were out there and have them destroyed. He also kept one copy watched it all time to torture himself.

Pretty good review except for the part about why would the girl love a bad guy. I've got news for you, they do all the fucking time, even known serial killers have female admirers and it's true women are attracted to tough guy leader types. 1950s were better at portraying male and female nature. in Clown world where 2+2=5 it's controversial to say 2+2=4

Too bad so many people died making it.

Wayne was not a Cowboy and was great in many movies where he played other kinds of characters.

On the other hand, he was usually not good in parts in movies that require accents (with the possible exception of Ford's The Long Voyage Home, but that was early in his career as a major lead acter, playing a supporting part).

Additionally, the part was badly written and the story made little sense.

John Wayne smoked 6 packs of cigs a day for decades and statistically the rest of the cast fell in line with the average cancer rate. The national rate is ~38% while the cast and crew of this film was ~41%.

The conqueror was a bad movie, but the idea it got people killed is completely unfounded.

40 people out of 200 eventually died from cancer (eventually, not within 5 years like Chernobyl. Some died more than 30 years later) after shooting a movie at a time when cigarettes were considered a food group (John Wayne had a 5 pack a day habit and the director, according to his widow, was a voracious chain smoker the entire time she knew him). Your hypothesis is based on a myth.

It really does irritate me every time I keep hearing the phrase "Other movies/this movie have/has done the same thing/but they are more objectively terrible thingy madoo’s that you need to shit on instead?"

Just because the older movies have the same mistakes, that doesn’t automatically sway the views or valid arguments of how we see or use against modern media is tanking are magically nonexistent. Just because other/older movies, video games or shows have the same problem, it doesn't excuse when your favorite sacred cow does it.

If anything it makes it worse because you already knew about how the flaws dragged it down under and somehow still did a worse job by falling into the same rabbit holes or creating all new ones and not learning or improving anything. Every time I hear a content creator use things like “more objectively terrible [insert recent piece of media release here] that people SHOULD hate on instead” and "spread the awareness" its done out of deflecting negative critiques somewhere else and pretending like the current day media has no flaws to count off of.

If Pure Kino's video on The Conqueror (1956) was the spread the awareness on how it was the most "objectively bad movie ever made" then that means Madam Webb (2024) should have had the outstanding and amazing golden quality to out do the Godfather. (Spoiler Alert: it isn't)

The most miscast film ever. Cowboy John Wayne as an Asian? Brooklyn redhead Susan Hayward as an Asian princess? What??? Why she ever accepted the role is a mystery - she looks nothing like a Mongol at all. Badly acted, with terrible corny dialogue. Wheee! Great fun for fans of bad movies. Acting honors, such as they are, go to Susan, who manages to keep a straight face while spouting those terrible lines. Too bad so many died of cancer because of the area's radiation. Didn't they have Geiger counters to check the area? Howard Hughes is said to have watched this film over and over. No wonder he went bonkers. I was a naive young kid in grade school, and a fan of John Wayne, when I first saw this pic in 1956 at a neighborhood theater. I thought it was terrific - ha!

It is said they imported tons of radioactive red soil back to the studio to finish some scenes. They could have simply used dyed sand. And the entire film could have been shot in the nearby Mohave Desert. No need to go all the way to Utah. Better yet, not film it at all.
