Regarding people wanting SteamOS even though distros like Bazzite exist: I think the major reason why is because they are used to having a big entity providing support for the OS and while they might not like what MS is doing with Windows, they are unwilling to trust an OS that doesn't have a big entity supporting it, SteamOS has the backing of Valve and this is likely why they prefer to wait for it instead.

the problem with linux for me is the work that i do require software that dont run well on linux (i do think of switching to mac for work and have my pc be linux only). so for now linux is only for gaming for me. and i doubt support for software on my line work will improve any time soon. FYI i do audio work( music folay) and unity implimentation( which i cant control and make sure the middleware of choice works on linux as its a team thing not just me we use unity with wwise) and even if it work i do not have time for it. it need to just work because im making money from it. downtime cost money. gaming downtime dont cost me money as its a hobby anyway.

The last time HP made a valuable product was when they made those handheld calculators.

I feel like when you mention people gaslighting themselves into believing they need steam os I think you are missing the point. Obviously steam os is not a hard prerequisite for gaming on Linux but having the steam name behind a distro will help people who are totally linux illiterate feel more confident/ comfortable switching. Sure there are other options but the vast majority of people don't want to compare different distros they just want to install a thing and game and having steam os is a great entry point for those people

While i agree with you that its not needed however, people lightly feel that "steamos" will be supported for them/made easy like buying a desktop with windows installed on it already.
if a little hand holding was to double the GNU Linux Desktop user base dose it really matter?

Windows 11 wasn’t made for gaming handhelds, but you know what would do decently as a OS for one? Windows 8 with its metro layout, the same design language they used for the Xbox 360 (and Xbox 1 I believe, I haven’t seen much of its menu UI before).
Genuinely, if Microsoft wants a counter operating system to steam, they should make a branch of Windows 8, update it with modern features and optimisations for a handheld and boom.

It’s something which surprises me, they have this actually decent OS/design which would work for such a device, but they refuse to use it and I have no clue why.

Playing devil advocate against my point, however, I’m still not sure how many people would use it considering it’d be up against steamOS which has so much praise as it is.

I never believed this because HP would be the last company to ditch something bad in favor of something good. If they thought Windows was bad for a handheld, they'd ask Microsoft to somehow enshittify it further.

If third parties end up producing Steam Deck devices, they need to either match or exceed Valve's quality and feature set for their own devices. Otherwise, I'm not interested.

Wrong... Every major tech company absolutely does have an R&D team looking into whether they should develop a Steam Deck. The only real context to argue about is, how far along in development they actually are.

So, I am actually one of those who have installed Bazzite on my ROG Ally. And honestly? It makes me want a proper SteamOS more.

At first I thought it's not a big deal, but then I saw that some Decky stuff don't work correctly on Bazzite. Next, I find myself annoyed at the lack of /nix empty folder which is causing some issues for nix install next major update. Speaking of- we're only just moving to bootc, and while that's cool as someone who've been on ublue train before Bazzite was a thing, I don't want new things on my game console. Just the setup process to get everything working as I want it was annoying, I don't want any changes on that thing if I could help it.

Plus, I still need a Windows partition for the games that don't have an anti-cheat workaround, whereas everyone seems to be treating Valve as the authority for verification on Linux, meaning only hardware confirmed by Valve has additional anti-cheat allowances.

SteamOS isn't going to be a silver bullet, I'd expect I'd still grab Handheld Daemon for some of its goodies, but I'd rather run SteamOS now that I've tested Bazzite Deck on my hardware.

Although I can't speak for the present, nor do I ever want an HP product again if I had to buy a finished product, and I'm also not a gamer, so maybe a laptop, for which my first choice would be a Framework. With that in mind:

When home PC's became more affordable, and regular people buying them really started taking off, so when Windows 95, came out I was already way ahead of the game, and with my degree as ann electrician, I thought it would be a good Idea to get into computer repair on the side. So I gave it a shot for already having skill doing so for myself and my geek friends, because we made Frankenstein systems out of often incompatible parts from Surplus business machines and servers, and I was up to date on all the hardware, and was already a power user in having a 386 I Souped up and maxed out running Windows 3.1, then a 486, then upgraded it to Win 95. And HP's were one common brand.

I started noticing that even with the same processor, and more RAM, the HP's were slow and sluggish compared to mine, and other brands with about the same specs too. And found out they added a whole layer of stuff between the BIOS and the OS which was for more simple trouble shooting, a few hardware settings, and a Windows install helper, not sure why as everything could be done without on all other PCS I had my hands in. But it was the bottle neck. They had Win95 installed and the "Made for Windows" sticker defacing the cases. So that was a red flag, because I wanted faster if anything, not slower.

I also found out that computer repair was way more about the OS, software user error, doing stupid shit so computer illiteracy, and would fix peoples PC only for them to mess them up again in no time, and by doing the same stupid shit, even after I printed up a list I gave all my clients, with tips n' tricks, a maintenance schedule... and my "Compugeek" logo and address... on it to make things easier for them, and I told them they should follow it like a religion.

Of the ~ 20 PC's I had fixed after that, only a single person was eager to learn that stuff, I got a few back not even a few months later all f'd up for all the same reasons, one guy even wanted to kick my ass and claimed I was at fault but I asked him to give it his best shot got in his face, and kicked his ass out, because it worked as it should for two freaking months and it was clearly his own doing. It's when I realized PC repair was not for me, because I could fix their PC's just fine but not their ignorance. Now I know that Microsoft pretty much want's it's users that way, to have more users who will also be less interested in even knowing they are being fleeced and used as a data harvesting and add serving platform, and just live with it, although it's so bad now it's no longer woking to their advantage as it used to, while the Linux user base keeps growing and more people are aware of their being an alternative.
