Friend there is no such thing as a true white marigold....like you last year, I tried the Kilimanjaro...nope!!! Tried the Eskimo [which is better] but still nope!!!😢 ah well the colour is very versatile tho and can be worked into cool colour beds/borders as well as warm coloured ones.

Pretty blooms get us every time. I longed for and finally planted gloriosa lily tubers which was quite expensive! Only to learn that every part of the plant is toxic. I waited until they dried out at the end of the season and threw the tubers and vines away. You can sacrifice a pair of gloves and dig them up and throw all away, or still enjoy them from afar. I have two small pups and limit what I plant and have to sacrifice fresh blooms as they eat everything in sight 😥. Get some much needed rest this coming season.

I’ve grown various varieties of monkshood for a couple of decades. Just wear gloves when you work around them and my dogs are smart enough to leave them alone. No need to be afraid of them and having a flowering perennial for shade is worth it. Also I let my Delphinium to self seed in the garden and just move the seedlings around in the spring, so much easier. I’m zone 3.

I'm also exhausted from gardening, but like you, when I get up and out into the garden, I quickly forget that and truly enjoy myself.

I do think I need an AA for gardening because I just started 2 new beds in the last week 🙃. I blame the weather. Here in Southern Ontario, Canada, it has been absolutely beautiful.

It looks like Wednesday the weather is going to turn 😢so I better get hopping!

I'd take the monkshood off your hands if I lived closer! It's one of the few things the deer rabbits leave alone (but they have eaten it) I have the solid blue one, I've been looking for the bi-color like yours!

Hi Steph,
Thank you for a beautiful video! I’m with you, so tired but it does feel so good to go out and start cleaning up once I get moving. I’m ready for hibernation mode. Lol along with some good series to watch. The thing frustrating me to go outside lately is we had a hard freeze here in KS which killed most pretty foliage. Then back up in the 80s again. So weird it freezes like that one time then hot for days. I bet New England is so beautiful right now. Makes me want to go visit Maine again. 😊

I planted Montauk daisies last fall for the first time so I wasn’t sure what to expect this year. I planted 2 plants I purchased from Lowe’s & they were beautiful in their nursery cans and then this year I watched them grow & grow & then I heard you mention them in one of your shopping videos recently that you should Chelsea chop them but it was to late by then & they got ginormous & have huge thick stems & I need to
a) relocate one of them & b) do the Chelsea chop next year for sure! & I also need to thank you for teaching me that about them! So, thank you Steph!
Also, thank you for answering my question about that lovely sedum you have. I’m not sure if it was the same one but I remember seeing it in a pot on your patio last year, maybe the year before but it was in the fall season & I remember how stunning I thought it was then also. So thank you for sharing that as well.
Your gardens are looking really beautiful & you and George’s hard work is really paying off. I enjoy seeing them and learning from your channel. 😊♥️

Regarding monkshood. When we moved into this house in 2021 the previous owner had a big stand of them. A friend pointed out to me how toxic they were. The next summer my husband pulled them all out by hand, which he shouldn't have done, and shortly after was diagnosed with a-Fib. He had several tests and there was no reason for the a-Fib other than the touching of the monkshood. Who knew that was one of the side effects?! He has since had two cardioversions and one heart ablation to get his heart back into rhythm - all from handling monkshood. Just don't plant it or as you are doing, just let it be.

We're having the same Indian Summer weather here in Michigan as well, it's been quite a while since we've had October weather this nice, especially several days in a row. We often get flurries in September here in Zone 6A! I'm trying garlic again this year after multiple fails a few years ago . I had Music & German Extra Hardy varieties back then, so I'm avoiding those like the plague until I can get some successes under my belt LOL.

I’m finding more flowers that reseed themselves and marigolds are one of them. I had to remove them before they drop all their seed or I would have a carpet of them next spring.
I forgot what zone/state you are in and wondered if some of the plants you show survive Z5. I’ve been talking notes of flowers that can handle a frost and freeze and would like more color in the fall. Stocks, snapdragons, petunias, feverfew, Gazania, Scabiosa and the dried flower heads of Gomphrena are still doing (ok) after hard freezes. The Gomphrena I first seen on your site and had so many that I planted heavily and it made a nice fluffy shrub and just love them. I hope what I think are seed will come true next year. Have to check out that mum.
We felt lazy a bit over a week ago just before frost and it’s been the longest growing season in WI, but oh are we ever Dry! We had filled the annual precipitation from March to July and now drought.
You just reminded me that I have poppy seeds to disperse. The nigella reseeded already and not familiar as it’s the first year. The mullein looks to have reseeded and welcome that and hope penstemon follow as well.
Some plants are amazing me with just one year growth from seed like Jupiter’s beard 😮 sigh, more work moving plants around.
Love the sedum line and will check that one out. The seed from Amish Cockscomb is Very plentiful and they worked Very well in winter sow and think they will have no problem doing it on their own, we will see. Win for me as it’s one less to bother starting 😂.
Thanks!
Oh, had to laugh at all those acorns—and I thought I had too many. It’s a weed here.

I planted my garlic yesterday. I may have gone overboard with over 100 cloves planted. 😅 Here in the Piedmont, we plant soft neck garlic 4 inches apart and 2 inches deep. I cover with a light layer of straw or shredded leaves, and then once they pop up, more straw is added as an insulator. Fertilize once in the spring and water 1/2” per week, and we’ll have enough garlic to harvest for ourselves and neighbors.
Your channel is one of my favorites. Continued blessings Steph!

Good to know larkspur seed shelf life; I have saved seeds right at the expiration point, but will try anyway (and thanks to you won't leave it another year).
The Sheffield mums are very cute and would cheer me up too! I have a similar beautiful dahlia, Deuil du Roi Albert; it has more variation in the coloring. Love the sedum in the pot, too.
The Back to the Future series may be my all time favorite movies! I'm Gen X, and I have fun relating because I was in high school in 1985. Other than that, time travel is cool. I may have seen this in the theater when it came out...

I always cut my Montauk daisies down by 1/3 to 1/2 in mid June. I live in zone 6b also. They are beautiful this year and they survived a few frosty nights. I always say they die at the first frost but this year they have proved me wrong. I always enjoy your gardens and your trips to Home Depot. Thanks,
Bonnie

Years ago I saw a blog where Martha Stewart was planting garlic and I adopted her method which has I believe given me larger heads at harvest.
Her method is to seperate the bulbs and soak for 10 minutes in vodka or 70% rubbing alcohol. This will kill pathogens and other issues that could be transfered. You can strain and reuse the solution to do different varieties to keep garlic separated by types.

Next you want to presoak the bulbs in a solution of fish emulsion or kelp meal etc. You mix to directions on the package of fertilizer. You let this soak overnight and then plant as you normally would. The soak really allows the bulb to wake up and start pushing roots. I find this is especially helpful if youre late planting and soil has cooled off.

You may notice green sprouts start growing out of soil which is great you can mulch after a good freeze the cold doesnt bother the garlic but you know it has started growing.

Figured I would share this method as I think it helped my garlic increase size
