Culturally responsive teaching is a research-based approach to education that aims to connect students' cultures, languages, and life experiences with what they learn in school. This approach helps students access rigorous curriculum and develop higher-level academic skills. It is a rich, intentional approach woven into every aspect of student learning, focusing on the assets students bring to the classroom rather than what they can't do. Culturally responsive teaching is centered on recognizing and nurturing the unique cultural strengths of every student, promoting success and creating an open-minded, supportive environment that celebrates cultural differences
Key Components and Goals
Culturally responsive teaching involves recognizing students' cultural displays of learning and meaning-making and responding positively and constructively with teaching moves that use cultural knowledge as a scaffold to connect what the students know to new concepts and content in order to promote effective information processing
. The major goal of culturally responsive teaching is to reverse patterns of underachievement for students of color by leveraging and utilizing the cultural learning tools that students bring to the classroom to make learning more relevant and effective
Gloria Ladson-Billings introduced the concept of culturally responsive teaching in the 1990s as a way to maximize students' academic achievement by integrating their cultural references in the classroom. Since then, a deep field of research has developed around culturally responsive teaching, including important work by leaders like Geneva Gay and Sonia Nieto
. Culturally responsive teaching was developed to change the narrative about Black children and their misbehavior and lack of success in school. It was based on observations of teachers who had success holding high expectations for students and integrating elements of the students' communities into classroom learning
