Transitioning from an Individual Contributor to a Manager in Your Engineering Career

I have heard in common on this subject that folks do talk about moving back to ic role from management if it doesnt work out, but I am trying to get the answer for the reverse and it would be a great help if you could cover that in one of these. What if an IC wants to move into engg management if they dont want to be hands on for their entire career only solving technical problems?
