Definitely don't drill. If the sound of the water swishing bothers you, you can roll up some paper towels and hand them outside the back of the AC. It will whisk the water out of that pool and quiet it down (it will be less efficient).

I have an old window ac that does not have the slinger ring. I drilled a hole to drain the water that does accumulate out. The rusting and dirty buildup from the slinger, and the fact that window ac units are cheap Chinese junk now is why they don't last very long. My 1988 Emerson is still running perfectly, I just had to oil the fan bearing a few years ago for the first time.

Those weeping holes can get blocked or clogged. If your worried about hitting coils then just take out a few screws and take the shell apart. Now you can drill then put it back together. No worries.

Water collecting on the bottom of the condenser leads to being rusted out and leaking out the refrigerant charge due to rust.

But that same water build up, its going rust the condenser coils eventually, and also, the dust will mix up with the water and create mud, clogging the ac, then its gonna start splashing the water towards the walls, and inside the house, staining walls and creating mold within the ac and the walls.
So, drilling helps a lot, and AC works fine also!

Walk away and let it ruin your house 😒 huh everyone i know drills the AC unit. Some water is good depending on what state you live in. In Florida you 100 percent have to drill unless you want major damage

here in the swamps of VA its 100% humidity almost every night. It will literally slind water all in the house and ive got it tilted twice what the manufacturer recommends. LG recommended a quarter bubble on the level, put mine at half bubble, still water inside. never had problems with older units. Newer units slinging water for efficiency hust creates mold, drill the holes, drill all the holes. (watch where your drilling.😂) Also have 2 dehumidifiers that run. Stay dry and mold free yall.

Damn if that’s the case, I fucked up because I already put a hole in mine. Mine is really old and there’s a lot of gunk inside and I couldn’t find the port or the water would exit from the internal front to the back so I drilled the hole because it kept leaking into my apartment and damaging my windowsill so I guess I have to get a new one or what’s the call here

@antronargaiv3283 - 30.08.2024 21:32

Yeah...no. It's just a crappy design. The "slinger" doesn't work and can't keep up with the condensate flow. The result is mold. The solution is to take the a/c apart, clear the (too small) drain holes in the styrofoam box, and then drill (yes) a hole in the slinger collection depression. Once you take the cover off the unit to clean it, you will see exactly where the hole needs to be drilled and it's nowhere near the condeser.

@jayv9286
@jayv9286 - 29.08.2024 20:23

No! Just know that several on here have reported an increase in efficiency after drilling, so like I said, the loss, if any, would be negligible. BTW, I see you have a unit sitting back further, does it throw condensate on the condenser coil, no, I didn’t think so. I’ve installed a couple of Mitsubishi mini split units, very high efficiency, they drain the condensate to the ground. SMH

So there’s no concern because sounds like there’s a lot of water in the portion outside and I could see kind of water spitting outside and I just don’t think it’s working properly. I’m gonna clean the filter on the inside and I just make sure it’s level. We got a huge storm here in Minneapolis last night multiple areas.

Until the rust stops it from flinging then it will walk up and into the house.if the design works somewhere then awesome. Doesn’t work here and I have to do water damage repairs.

Hmm, I would say, YES DRILL IT!!! Why? Math:
Even when I haven't found accurate information about the efficiency of the slinger, I don't believe it would be more than 10%, which means that, for a Windows AC consuming around 50 per month, we would be saving 5 dollars per month or 60 per year, which is less than the cost of 2 required maintenances during the year, something I don't do, in any of the 12 units I own, and, at the end, we have water causing damage that reduce the life expectancy of the unit and force us to spend more on expensive maintenance. So, the savings on BTU efficiency would be, by far, smaller than the costs associated with keeping the water in the tray creating rust, noise, mold bacteria, and stinky odor. Now I'm drilling all my units, and so far so good, but still have to wait some time to fully validate the results.

This might be a feature...but regardless...drill a hole about 3/4 of an inch or bigger if necessary in a spot at the bottom where there should have been a hole. Keeps the bottom from rusting out and and collecting debris and mold at the bottom.

I drill mine and why....

1. Makes noise when fans are on.
2. Hold dirt and mold.
3. Rot out the coils quicker.
4. Mosquito breeding place.
5. You have to take it out of your window to clean it more often.
6. Smells more.
7. Just too much noise....

My account unit us suddenly not draining or evaporating or whatever it's supposed to be doing and enough water collects to start building up ice, freezing up the unit and making a racket. I shut it off long enough to fully melt and when I turn it back on, it's still squeaking for a while as it tries to sling off/out/over the excess water (out the front, if the cover & screen are off) until it's back to the right level and then it runs/cools just fine... Until it freezes again and we start all over. This unit has run well for years but moving/positioning (& almost falling once) seems to have had some unknown, adverse affect that I can't figure out. It's more than tilted enough, could too much rearward tilt cause a problem? It isn't a drastic tilt, for sure.

I ended up drilling mine a few years ago because condensate is very corrosive and it weakens the condenser and smells. It's been 100+ where I live for the past few weeks and its still making 50 degree air inside.
