Does the primary fire animation cancel work with his shield ability well

I’m surprised you didn’t mention his melee also builds up dark which, 10 per hit, and with its wide swing you can hit multiple enemies to build it quickly.
Also his ultimate doubles their hit boxes essentially, and I think his Maelstrom (E ability) can hit both, doubling the damage. So if you’ve got a lot of dark magic you can kill a lot on your own through the ultimate
