Hi Fraser, I think you will like this cruise and the following 21 nights, especially with that bed! I hope you got ‘the’ chair sorted out. The room looks very nice for an inside cabin. Seeing Miami and Fort Lauderdale reminded me of a journey I took with my daughter when she was 13 or 14 years of age (she is now 49!), when we spent 3 weeks in Florida touring in white Mustang convertible. We started in Orlando at Disney and Universal, then went across to Tampa and St Petersburg, before going down the west coast, and then across through the Everglades (not pleasant as we stayed in a Gun Lodge type place arriving at sunset to be met with black clouds of mosquitoes & midges). The journey from there went through the west side of Hispanic Miami area (not the best place to be in an open top car with just 2 females). I had to stop for fuel and have never been so scared in a petrol station! We survived though, and then toured the port area of Miami, up through Collins Avenue, saw the lovely areas where so many lovely mansions were, before staying in a hotel on the Fort Lauderdale beach area for a few days. The remaining time was via Boca Raton, Palm Beach, Cape Canaveral, before going back to Orlando. A very memorable trip. Looking forward to seeing the rest of this cruise, especially the Panama Canal section. We had a u3a talk last year by a guy who was an engineer and explained about the Suez Canal, and how different was the construction of the Panama Canal. I didn’t realise how it manages to go through such a varied terrain. I think recent reports have been about problems with the lack of water, as it doesn’t have the reservoirs associated with our UK canal system to service the locks. Sorry for the long comments. Very envious of that bottle of Champagne you had to guzzle down!

I agree with you 100%. I also prefer the paper schedules. The online schedule is handy, but the paper schedule is much better for planning the day.

That little beach looked sweet we saw as the ship negotiated out of port. Private l wonder?

Perfect start to the day…. Champagne. However if that was me I’d have never got to my other ship! That room on Holland America was so lovely… it’s a cruiseline I know very little about so I’m looking forward to your content.

Looking forward to more of your onboard experience since I’m on Rotterdam from Amsterdam back to Fort Lauderdale, 13 nights. I got one of their very few solo oceanview cabins on deck 1. Also my first HAL cruise. Funny how my cruises seem to almost mirror yours. Scottish boys think alike?

We saw a Holland America ship when we visited Montenegro from Croatia, honestly totally AMAZED. I’ve never seen such a HUGE ship (nor such HUGE people getting off it!!) Not sure I’d love it. Enjoy your cruise Bonny lad, love your channel

Enjoyed this, thanks! I've only done 1 Holland cruise, but it was very nice. Also just had 1 "side to side" cruise experience but it was great because being in Seattle I only had to walk about 50 feet from Holland to Princess entrance. 😂

Holland America is a very nice line, but I would call them premium, not luxury. I sailed the Rotterdam earlier this year and the #1 issue I had was the pervasive smoke from the casino filtering into the surrounding public areas on decks 2 & 3 as well as the forward stairwell as high as deck 7 or 8. The air handling system seemed to push the smoke out of the casino rather than suck fresh air into the casino from the surrounding areas. It really was quite awful. If they made the casino non-smoking it would totally change the experience. The ship was stunningly beautiful and the staff were lovely, if a bit harried as the ship was packed full!

I look forward to following along, I'm on the Rotterdam out of FLL in December so you're probably on a similar cruise as me.

Fun film. We’ve never been on a Holland America, though we were once shadowed on an NCL round the Med by an HAL ship chartered by some very charming lady-liking-ladies from the US.
