“The Venetian glass is fragile and easily harmed as the consequence of a deliberate search for extreme delicacy. The underlying thesis is that it’s the duty of civilization to create environments where it’s okay to be fragile. […] It teaches people that moderation is admirable and elegant not just a tedious demand. It tells us that being careful is glamorous and exciting, even fashionable. It’s a moral tale about gentleness told by means of a drinking vessel. The Venetian glass makes a big claim: being mannered and civilized involves being aware of the effect of one’s strength on others”.

Hmmm you definitely glossed over the fundamentalistic orgins of social constructs as well as biological imperatives toward unity that make socialization, thus by extension the proliferation of manners possible. Nor did you mention how often manners and mannerism originate from religious dogma; that at the time of its inception was indistinguishable from bourgeoisie. So there was an imparative to perpetuate narrative social construct of "civility" based on theological principals. Under those same principals there were exclusions and exceptions to whom they applied. Those pariah are then subject to the antithesis of civility perpetuated & circulated by the majority amongst themselves.

If we cannot combine strength and gentleness we will be left with a humanity divided between brutes and victims.

The critic of American manners was wrong. It was and is possible to rise above your station. Americans don’t have stations to “rise above”. They’re not static.

Manners — beyond a point — are tools of harassment and oppression. Esp. so-called sexual manners. Strange that it is not bad manners for a woman to titillate a man using her choice of clothes, décolleté, etc., but it becomes criminal when a man lives his sexual side.
In such a society, it’s better for men to be ‚uncivilised‘ and untamed.

Where is the scope of thinking accusing patriarchy when most of the men in the past were taught manners by women.

How are you gonna do a video on the history of manners centred around Europe and fail to mention the impact the Moors had on the hygiene of Europeans??

I generally love this channel and this is mostly a great video, but I'm with stunned to see the issues of sexual abuse and rape included under the category of 'manners'.

Many women would prefer to be killed rather than raped. It's quite dehumanising to compare horrific abuses of women to table manners and picking your nose.

Maybe you should have included other serious abuses like hate crimes, child abuse and murder, just for logical consistency.

I get that Alain de Bottom is a dude, but I expected a great deal more wisdom and humanity from him. Disappointed.

In whole video there is no mention about asian countries!! As like there was no manner! Oh sure how could they?! Because Western HEROICALLY taught manner to East by COLONIZATION AND ABSOLUTE DEATH AND DESTRUCTION OF CULTURE.

So the whole manners idea was a manipulation propelled by women to oppress men into being less manly? How nice of you. Thank you, I would have never even be able to come to this conclusion myself. Delightfully devilish, I should resume.
And so called "civilized man" is a centuries-long result of woman refining man up to the point where some men are liken their state in which the oppressor has put them into? Very well

What I’ve learned is that human beings will spend centuries building something up - governments, manners, rituals - then spend centuries tearing them down, only to build them up again. It’s a cycle. Everything we believe in is just temporary, and is on its way out or up.

Casual dress by world leaders is "over civilized " to the extreme and fakery as an art form. It's disrespectful, an insult to their office and the intelligence of those they represent.

So little example. There is so many culture that have different set of manners. Also in Asia, women that bow to the husband tend to be called by the society as "Good wife" or "Good Mom". But in the west now Women so happy called "Independent" or "Woke women" and tend to control the relationship. Different culture different manner. West and east is very different
