Do NOT overpay a professional installer! If you are comfortable on a ladder and on your roof, you can absolutely do this yourself and your display will pay for itself with the savings of labor. Start out small…do a shrub or outline your sidewalk or driveway so you learn how to do your jump wires and connectors on the ground. Then next year, pick your longest gutter that faces the street so you get comfortable on the ladder, handling wires and figuring out which clips work best for your home. Don’t forget the economics of scale! A 500’ 18-2 gauge stringer with sockets pre-installed is much cheaper than buying 5 individual 100’ stringers. So, even if you aren’t going to use the full 500’ or 1000’ the first time out, you can buy it and store it and use it next year as your display expands! LED bulbs are more expensive than incandescent bulbs and if you get faceted LED bulbs, you still get the incandescent glow but the LED’s use far less electricity and are easier to string together off the same run because the overall load is lower than again, incandescent bulbs over the same distance and spread. In closing, don’t forget to get a spool of 18-2 gauge green “lamp wire”. This is much easier to work with to make your jumper lines and extensions. Just like the “pros”!
