The truth is that no-one knew the name of the dog until he was christened Bobby after his master's death by people who noticed him at the graveside.
Contemporary paintings of Bobby are conflicting in how the dog looked, suggesting that Bobby could have been two different dogs.
The reason for this is that the local cafe owner realised he was getting a lot more custom due to Bobby and when the original dog died he replaced him with another, bearing as close as possible resemblance. After the second 'Bobby' died he was not replaced as it would have been stretching credibility to have a Skye terrier supposedly living more than 16 years.
The City Of Edinburgh knows this full well but for obvious reasons will never admit it; it would be akin to admitting The Loch Ness Monster doesn't exist!
