Dodge Chrysler has also hopped in the electronic variable valve timing bandwagon. Different versions of VVT technology exist, including the ability to switch camshaft lobes to effect valve lift, duration and timing to suit varying operational needs. More common are engines that use a phaser to adjust camshaft position or valve timing. Mechanical, hydraulic and electrical controls are now part of VVT engines. Motor oil is used as the hydraulic medium that makes VVT work. Dodge Chrysler use various VVT schemes, and here's one developed by Borg Warner Corporation.
Right through the camshaft, oil enters the passages to the camshaft phaser. The phaser is a mechanical devise with two main pieces, the rotor, and the phaser body. The oil control solenoid, feeds and vents the oil passages. Oil flows into and out of passageways, inside the camshaft. The phaser body is physically bolted to the camshaft sprocket.
