I have lived in Boise for 32 years. Definitely more liberal than in the early 2000’s. Downtown leans liberal and the north end is uber liberal. Once you’re 5-10 miles from downtown, it becomes way more conservative. I think it’s these conservative influences that keep the greenbelt and parks relatively safe. My advice. If you lean right and are moving to Idaho, I would put Boise low on your list.

I'm a conservative, but I think we need more Democrats in Idaho. Our two-party system only works well when there is general parity. We all have to compromise with our neighbors and I think going slower is always better than moving too fast

Born and raised Idaho guy here but when it comes to Boise I think to myself great town but not sure I want to live there. I live in Twin Falls happy my town has not fallen to the dark side yet. But I get worried Idaho is going to turn into a liberal puke hole if we don't stay vigilant.

as long as people keep migrating to the Boise area to escape their problems the liberalization of the Boise area will continue and it is more liberal than most of the state but that wasn't the case 10+ years ago. These people moving to the area with their views even if they were conservative where they came from that may be mild compared to a Idaho native. Maybe it was too conservative in the past but it's definitely moving in the other direction.

Its funny how every person who moves to Idaho from some insane place where everything has fallen apart; talks about Idaho like the things they are running from will not follow them here. You cant run away from an "illness", you just bring it with you or on your person. Everyone moving here is coming because they think its a better and safer place to live, but they cannot see the truth that what they are looking for cannot be found. The only thing that made Idaho special was that you werent here, thats why you will not have the future you seek.

Man, I have been here a year. Way way more “liberal sign” than I saw in the woodlands Texas…… scared for the state I chose based on the values I saw historically present here. The city will grow…… eventually the Boise population will out number everyone else in the state (see Colorado voting history), and everyone is F#%^^%^*…… will happen about the time Eastern Oregon merges, hopefully delays that inevitability…..

I live in Boise and most are not liberal. You have a couple of Californians who talk a big game, but they are harmless. If you compare Boise to the rest of Idaho then it is liberal, but if you compare Boise to any city in California, Oregon, etc. It's not liberal at all.

Love "their" freedoms. Key word: their. Freedom should extend to all not just "them." This is what's missing from far right and left both. I live in Boise and while it is more moderate than the majority of Idaho, its still far less so than many other places outside of the state.

I lived there 30 years. Political trends come and go there, and come again. I will say most things there have ties to businesses, corporate interest, or some other special interest when it comes to politics. Especially in a state funded like it is. In a more direct answer, it was a common joke around elections that of the candidates Boise had two parties: Republican and Liberal Republican.

There is no way Boise is 50/50. They have a democrat mayor who did a terrible job during covid and then re-elected her. But that is typical of democrats in general. They don't have the ability of critical thinking only group think. Honestly our 2 party system is broken in every way and now what we have is either Patriots or Traitors

Big cities tend to be more liberal just by the nature of being big. To understand why, you have to understand the fundamental biological differences between liberalism vs conservatism.

Liberalism is driven by a desire for novelty, nuance and complexity. They have larger anterior cingulate cortexes, which is the area responsible for emotional regulation and processing social interaction. They tend to do better in large cities because of the diversity and novelty of experience that you find in bigger cities.

Conservatism is born of a desire for security, predictability and authority. They tend to have larger amygdala, which is the area of the brain that regulates fear and dealing with threats. This is why they tend to stick to smaller, rural areas - the homogenous communities feel safer.

I gotta say, I personally think Boise is pretty conservative, but regardless the biggest poblem the entire state is having is the massive influx of people moving here, regardless of political status, local Idahoans cannot afford to live here if they do not already have a home, apartments have been crammed up against every main street in the area, the rent per month is almost double the typical monthly morgage from 5-10 years ago, the only way to afford housing in the area is rent with friends, already have a house, or move here with money
I don't understand the appeal of moving here besides greed, it legitimately screws up the lives of the people who have lived here their whole lives

As a lifelong resident of rural western Idaho, Northern Idaho, and now Boise, I can say with certainty - Californian implants are far far to the right of those of us who grew up here. Most are wealthy land/business owners in agriculture that do exactly to Idaho what they claim, "the libs," are doing to California - Bringing big money and overwriting local culture.

The neighborhoods of Boise run the spectrum of liberal to conservative. Was perfectly illustrated during covid and mask participation. Go to a grocery store in one part of town and everyone masked, masked people walking alone on a sidewalk. Go to another part of town and maybe 10% mask wearers. North end.....very liberal. University district, Bench, downtown, also liberal. Foothills, Highlands, SW Boise, Western Garden City, fairly conservative.

I'm 60 now. When I was in the military, I was stationed in very conservative states that had more of a homeless population and higher crime than Boise.
And that was during the Reagan administration.

People complain about liberal territories but they tend to be the more fun cities. The conservative patches tend to be super rich and not very fun to visit so it’s never made sense to me from a traveler’s perspective to criticize liberal cities. You’re not visiting for the politics. If you want to visit a conservative town, have at it but don’t expect to have a lot of fun. The word conservative is not synonymous with fun or diverse which is what a city needs to expand in various markets.

Sadly, any city with a university is going to have a more liberal population, especially since our entire education system, national wide, has turned into liberal indoctrination centers.
The biggest push for prop one on the current ballot is from Boise and out of state groups. They espouse the open primary but never mention the “ranked choice” provision that is absolutely ridiculous.

Yeah. Idaho is insanely leftist. Bunch of people walking around winking and nodding at each other pretending to be conservative but it's very liberal.

Fathers don't exist as a thing in Idaho for one. The word father used to be defined under state law there but a few years ago was removed. If you look under definitions there isn't one for the word father since it doesn't exist as a thing.

When a child is born in Idaho it only has a mother. The state doesn't recognize the male biological progenitor of a child as being a thing. It's insanely leftist.

Idaho only has a reputation for being conservative. If you look at the laws you can see for yourself it's really not.

Different brands of 'Liberal" from different generations' versions. This state is run well. Have a sense of neighborliness. Boise has something for everyone. I am a musician and I meet wonderful folks from everywhere. I never ask what the politics are. Boise is "liberal" and has been since I arrived from Tennessee in 1974. The North Enders are calling the shots. This may change over time. Just remember, Idaho is where self reliance lives.

Just the downtown and north end neighborhoods. Unfortunately, those areas control the City Council. And we currently have an uber-liberal mayor imported from the west coast. The good news is that they aren't enough to change the county from being nice and red.
