I always looked at people who read a lot as ‘phony’; until a certain someone gave me her own copy of this classic back in dec ‘18.
It’s funny how it all changed when i finished reading it.
It felt as if my life story was being narrated from a third person POV.
Somehow, you feel at peace after reading this; at least that is what I felt. There’s a certain warmth to this classic that definitely makes you look at your own reflection.
I’m now a phony person in my own eyes. No week goes by without finishing a book.
All thanks to this.

Now writing this comment feels phony ( lol )

In J. D. Salinger’s own words :
“What really knocks me out is a book that, when you’re all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it.”

I’ve wished that on numerous occasions now. Thanks to this one classic.

Thanks vaani for such an insightful review on this book.... This book is very close to my heart..... The thing that i loved most about this book is the way it explains the slow effect of grief..... I lost someone very close to me at a very young age so i understood the conflicting personality of holden....... What made him so sensitive and what makes him a jerk at times..... This book is something that is gonna stay with me forever............ One more thing i love about it is that holden is a very human character.. Someone all teenager could relate to to some extent....... "I sort of miss everybody i told about. Even old stradlater and Ackley, for instance i think i even miss the goddamn Maurice. Its funny. Dont ever tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody".

Don't ever tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody.

Old Holden is the kinda guy who lies to middle-aged women on the subway about his brain tumors and regrets it later.

Hi Vani,
I have read this book after Dhruv said in your channel that he would recommend this book to every 21 year old. I am 21. It's a great read, it made me laugh so hard at times and there were times when I was also frustrated with Holden for being so critical. But what stands out is his brutal honesty and satire on the superficiality in society. Thank you for your insights. I am definitely going to read it again❤️
My favourite lines were "What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn't happen much, though."

Love,
Vini

Among other things, you'll find that you're not the first person who was ever confused and frightened and even sickened by human behavior. You're by no means alone on that score, you'll be excited and stimulated to know. Many, many men have been just as troubled morally and spiritually as you are right now. Happily, some of them kept records of their troubles. You'll learn from them—if you want to. Just as someday, if you have something to offer, someone will learn something from you. It's a beautiful reciprocal arrangement. And it isn't education. It's history. It's poetry.”

― J.D. Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye

Nope, nope, and NOPE! Catcher in the Rye is a useless piece of drivel disguised as a book that is not worth any rational person's time. Phillip Lopate's article "Philip Lopate is no fan of Catcher in the Rye" from the NY Times explains it well.

The first impression I got from reading this book is that it's funny – as in actually funny. I don't read too much but I would bet a character with the wit and dry humour shown by Holden is hard to come by, or not, like i said I don't read too much (I love stories but reading requires immense will power). To me, the entertainment value far surpass any deep analysis you might get from this book. The endearing inocent nature of the character is also a highlight and on the same note of strengths are the seemingly mean-spirited inner thoughts, and opinions.

P.s. Why do most people, talking about TCITR, tend to talk in a Holden-est way? I'm not immune to this either. I hate it, I really do.

The Catcher in the Rye as a classic makes me feel embarrassed for humanity... It's a bad book that people have projected their own issues into to create imaginary depth. Otherwise its empty of any redeeming qualities.

I am reading this book and its so engrossing about the daily life of Holden Caufield and one scene where Stradlater who gives Caufield an assignment while he goes on to date with Jane and somehow Holdon does the assignment on composition about his brother's baseball mitt but when his senior arrives, he only complains why he didn't do about a house description and with his angst, Caufield tears his assignment and complains. This is shown in every part of the reality in our world as ternagers suffer from a longing self of loneliness.🎉❤
