An enchanted weapon/artifact having it's own personality? I believe the credit goes to Tite Kubo and Shueisha. Bleach's first Manga debuted on August 7th, 2001, although I'm sure there are plenty of other earlier examples if I looked. I'd have to do some research to find out the first example of thus, although if you think about it, Excalibur may be the first literary example of a weapon possessing a free will of it's own.
