Augie Amato, born in Sicily was a capo in the Gambino Crime Family
Augie and his son Vince were long time fixtures for the Gambino’s in Florida.
Augie was thought to work closely with Michael Angelo Spinella. aka Martin Steel was a Sicilian born soldier in the Genovese family.
He served under capo Mike Miranda and was associated with top mobsters like Luciano, Profaci, Genovese and Costello.
Spinella was a killer, large drug trafficker and a one time member of the infamous Purple Gang. He had a crime record that mentioned assault, murder, robbery, battery and attempted murder.
Spinella got deported to his native Italy in 1953. Not that it made much of a change, but snuck back into the US through Florida, and stayed to further his criminal career. who died in September of 1971,
The Gambinos always had close ties with Tampa, through the Amato brothers friendship with Santo Jr in the 60s,
The Amato’s and Spinella were relatively unknown outside Miami.
Vincent Amato was the son of Augie Amato. Vincent was also deeply tied into Florida.
Vincent was connected with several robberies, including the holdup of a bank in New Haven, Conn.
A second son, Frank was also believed to be active in the Gambino’s
Santo Trafficante Jr. rented 2505 Bristol Avenue in Tampa from Vincent Amato, Augies son, for the accounting low price of $200 a month. Trafficante sold the house to Amato when he got into tax trouble
In 1966 Vincent Amato was indicted with conspiring to extort $100 weekly payments from the Pink Pussycat and of forcing the bars owner to hire Amato as “floor manager” for $150 a week
